August pickups
An unimaginably great week for this Dave Hoskins collector. Here are two cards that are really tough and I landed both.
The first is his 1952 Globe Printing Dallas Eagles card, given out at some number (possibly only one) of Eagles home games that season. Unlike many photo cards these are roughly standard Baseball card size. The second is from a 200+ ”card” set of stickers in 2017 commemorating 100 years of the Magallanes Baseball Club (Venezuela). Not only didn’t I know this sticker existed until last week, I didn’t even know Hoskins played in Venezuela!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2aef33b10a.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...910ee932ea.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Just got this on on COMC. It's got Ruth AND Gehrig so it should go up, up, up forever! (Or so I hear.)
|
I love the Fleer Laughlin cards, fun drawings and great tidbits of baseball lore and history.

Picked up a group of 54s and as luck would have it, a grey back card was included.

Love the Globe Printing Hoskins!

Although I technically didn't acquire any of these in August, they were returned from PSA in August so I consider them August pickups. Some real toughies here that I'm happy to have rescued from dealer common boxes.

I've been looking for the 1969 rookies without the black outline for years! I was beginning to think it was a myth! You wouldn't want to share the purchase price would you? I've never seen one so I have literally know idea what a "reasonable" cost might be.

The 5 Spiezio and no black '69 I found in a dealers common box in May of this year. My heart nearly stopped when he asked for $5 for the pair. The two Kalines I found at a show in Nov 2020, can't remember exactly but it was less than $10 for the pair. |
LCS pickup this morning. Lower grade card technically due to a lot of surface wear, but at least to me this presents fantastically, and can’t complain about the centering either. I wasn’t really looking for this card, but the price was right and it’s only my second vintage Jackie. Very happy!

I'd be pretty happy with that one too. :) |

I am putting together a Steve Carlton player run. He was my favorite player when I was a kid. So far, I've been focused on the 16 base cards from 1965-1980; this includes the '72 regular and Traded.
With this addition, I'm down to needing four more: 1967; 1968; 1969; and 1972 regular (Cardinals uniform.) |

For the first 60 years after this card was produced, it did not feature any Hall of Famers. That changed in year 61. |

Just picked up this 54T Mays. Happy to have it part of my collection.

Was able to pick this cool 1974? HIT KING poster for next to nothing. Trying to determine how to frame it... might try to make my own.
Man was Pete Rose and Reds great. I played little leage then ( the Ono Mets) and tried to play "ball to the wall" like Pete. There were so many great players on one team that you had to stop what you were doing to watch every at bat :) |

Unfortunately, the label is complete codswallop. In fact, I only picked it up so that I could send it back to PSA to get it right. But for a moment I had delusions of grandeur!

From a "Value Vintage" PSA sub that finally made it's way back to me.
Arrived at PSA 3/11/21, checked in 4/22/21. Assembly on 7/11/22 and grades on 8/8/22. Arrived back to me in RI on 8/10/2022. Since those were sent in early 2021, they cost $12 per sub plus shipping and insurance. https://baseball-trivia-game.com/images/vint_psa_1.jpg I traded for the Yaz from a local card shop when I was about 14 or 15, back sometime around 1990-92. I traded an entire box of "good" cards from that era. I think even then, the dealer was giving me a significant break because he was excited to see a kid wanting a Yaz RC. It's only a "3", which feels accurate. It completes a little run I have of Yaz flagship Topps cards from 1960-1979. The '65 League Leader card is a strong 4, I think, and any leader card with Mantle on it tends to command a premium. I'm happy enough with the grade. https://baseball-trivia-game.com/images/vint_psa_2.jpg I love vintage Topps League Leader cards, and so should you. The 1964 Topps NL HR Leaders is one of my favorites, and features 4 Hall of Famers. I was pleasantly surprised that this got a 6. I was hoping for a 5. The Sutton RC is off center. When I submitted it, I was hoping for a 7(OC), but then PSA stopped doing qualifiers, so I was figuring it'd get graded a "5". https://baseball-trivia-game.com/images/vint_psa_3.jpg Two 1969 Topps, both OC...again, I was originally thinking 7(OC), so was pleased when these came back straight 6's. Was 17 months a long time to wait to get these back? Absolutely. But at this point getting solid grades on them and paying $12 each feels pretty good. |

I picked this Mays up not too long ago that I believe is in similar condition. I believe it deserves a higher grade. maybe I should send it off to PSA. |

After having picked up the Red Heart and '58 Topps, I realize I have a lot of green Warren Spahn cards.

Some 70T and 1 69T variations and regular issues - filling the gaps

Since I was turned onto the Richard Dingman site, I am continuing the quest for additional variation/print anomalies that have been identified by Mr. Dingman.
Attached are 25 1970 Topps and 1 1969 Topps that I just picked up that were either listed or I found while looking for them. A couple are the base cards as I already had the documented card. I have another 77 cards that should be here by the end of the week. |

Went off the beaten path to track down this pair of tough 1969 'White Letter' variations. They are what I call 'pack centered,' meaning the standard/normal centering found on Topps cards from the era, and there's enough white around the edges to soothe my non-OCD brain. Plus, the corners and images are Ginsu-sharp. They are really nice...
Attachment 530557 For you POP enthusiasts, there are only 7 total PSA 9s (2 of which have qualifiers) of #471 Ted Savage, and only 5 total PSA 9s (2 of which have qualifiers) of #511 Diego Segui. Rarefied air, indeed. |

Picked up the Mick. Currently the only Mantle in my collection.

Very, very nice '52 Bowman Mickey, Sean. The card looks so clean, and the picture registry is particularly crisp. Well chosen. All the best, Brian Powell

Grade 5-6 corners with grade 8-9 centering & focus....my kind of card. |
I saw this at a recent card show in Raleigh and thought it was once of the nicest mid-grade '57 Micks I'd ever seen. It carried a bit of a hefty price tag, but I thought I'd kick myself forever if I didn't buy a nice '57 before prices got even higher. I worked out a deal with the seller for this and a couple other sharp HOF '57s and a super nice raw '55 Bowman Aaron.

Did anyone here land this signed 1929 Kashin last night? Really kicking myself for missing out. Threw an early bid but time ran out before I got back to it.
Despite the bleeding and markup on the back, this is a great early sig of his. The “J”, the “F”, and the connected “Xs” are all consistent with pre-1930 when he was just starting to make a name for himself. https://www.ebay.com/itm/38506457333...mis&media=COPY |

Not exactly the 311, but at 2 percent of the price...

Beautiful card, Peter! His best card, IMO.
|
There are so many great cards in 53BC. It used to be a more popular set than it is now. Perhaps the lack of rookie cards, or the lack of names on the front, has something to do with it? Also notable omissions of Ted Mays and Jackie, I suppose.
