1925 NFL *Champions Pottsville Maroon Football Team

Sometimes content outweighs condition. Rare 1925 photo of the NFL Pottsville Maroon Football Team that won the championship only to have it controversially taken away from them. One of their games was played, without the NFL's consent, in a larger stadium. This resulted in them having to forfeit a game, which then allowed the Chicago Cardinals to claim the title. Photos were made for the players at a reunion.

Two players shown, Berry and French, appear in 1933 Goudey baseball set. And the Cardinals gridiron team included Goudey set-mate Evar Swanson. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The Maroons losing the NFL title in 1925 is arguably biggest robbery in NFL history — they were clearly the best team in the land, pro or college. I understand the NFL tried to get the Cardinals to give up the trophy a few years back, but ownership wouldn't do it. Once, I was one the phone with someone from the Pottsville chamber of commerce, and I was surprised they hadn't heard of the story.
