1978 Thurman Munson single signed W.S. Ball
Hi fellow collectors,
I recently acquired a 1978 official World Series baseball signed by Thurman Munson. It is made out to "Jim". "Jim" was a friend of Thurman's who knew him from growing up with him in Ohio. It is a single signed ball. I would like to sell this baseball signed by a potential future hall of famer. My issue is that I have no idea what it is worth, or where I should try to sell it maximize my return? I am a card collector primarily and have never sold an autographed item before. Any helpful thoughts would be appreciated. I will be going to the National in AC later this month - in case their is someone there who would pay a fair price. Thanks! |
No pictures of it ?

The only way to maximize your selling price is to have the ball authenticated by a reputable company. If not, you will be offered pennies on the dollar and with good reason. Way too many fake autographs of Munson out there.
I'm assuming you know "Jim" since you know the backstory on the autographed ball. You're not asking the forum for opinions on the autograph or authenticity, but rather how to maximize your $, is that correct? Why not post a few pictures of the ball so we can all enjoy seeing it. |
Munson autos
Hi,
I appreciate your comments. Which autograph authenticators are best for autographs like the one I have? I have heard of PSA ans Spence - are there any others that are reputable and trusted by the autograph baseball community? I have taken some photos of both the ball and a Thurman Munson autographed ticket from the 1978 World Series. I will try to post here soon. Thanks! |

Thanks for the pictures - one can't tell from just photo's, but it looks like the real deal to me.
The 2 most widely used and accepted authenticators for baseball's are definitely PSA and JSA. You may want to invest $10 and have the autograph pre-screened by PSA. Go into their web site and check out the details. Great items - congrats. |
pre-screening
Thanks for the comments. Pre-screening sounds interesting and affordable. What does it mean? Sorry for my lack of auto knowledge.

If you know this auto to be legit, I'd forego the Quick Opinion and just send it to PSA. Choose the "Authenticate Only" option, as you don't want it graded since both the ball and auto would grade low due to condition. They'll send it back to you in a ball cube with a little sticker on it, which will then correspond to pictures/certification on their website. For example, here is a Griffey ball I sent to them: https://www.psacard.com/cert/AK85295/dna
That's the route I would take to maximize your profit on the ball, as most buyers would accept that as legit. |
authetication
The auction house I chose agreed to get the ball authenticated on their dime.
