OT: Anybody have the holiday off today?
Just curious.
|
I do, in MA. Schools are closed in my town as well.
|
I work in retail and only closed three days a year but I know our local bank is closed.
Drew |
Only if it was a tax holiday, not a government employee holiday.
|
Well, there's trash pickup here in Walpole, MA. I dashed outside at 6:45AM when I heard the truck start down our street. :D
|
Didn't even know today is a federal holiday until I saw this thread.
Saves me from going to the post office today Brian thanks for the heads-up |
school is closed but work is work.

No day off... PO and bank closed, schools were already out, most businesses open, state courts locally are open (I believe it was an option for the circuits across the state to open or not). I think this year the holiday sneaked up on some people, and that within a few short years more state and local offices will close. And Walmart, drug stores, fast food places will remain open.
Who of us remember when there were separate holidays for Washington's Birthday and Lincoln's birthday, back before they were merged for that joint President's day that is always on a Monday? I recall looking up in an encyclopedia about Washington's birthday... when he was born the date was February 11. But that was on the Julian Calendar (this little geek kid hadn't heard of that). When Britain and the colonies shifted to the Gregorian Calendar in 1752, they shifted 11 days (which lead to a bunch of lawsuits because of landlords and creditors wanting a month's rent or interest on a 19 or 20 day month). Anyway, Washington's birthday moved to February 22nd. Lincoln was born on February 12, long after the calendar switch confusion. When I was in grade school both dates were separate holidays. By the time I was in Jr High School Presidents Day was covering both days, and kinda covers all President's birthdays. I believe Lincoln's birthday is still a state holiday here in Kentucky, and state offices have the option of closing or not. Hardly any do anymore. Julian calendar... Gregorian calendar... I don't think I actually totally understood the 'why' of that calendar swith stuff, but I do recall it lead to me grabbing other encyclopedia volumes and reading about leap years and the Dog Star, Sirius, the flooding of the Nile, and how long it took the Earth to orbit the Sun. So no day off here, but it will be in a very few years. |
I am off today - live in NJ, work in NY. Kids were off from school Friday.
|

Federal employee here, so it's a holiday.
Nice thing is, Juneteenth coincides with my birthday - which is now a federal holiday!! And this year, Juneteenth, Father's Day and my birthday all fell on Sunday. |
Paid our shipping person time and a half for the day.
We're hiring! :D |

Self employed. I wondered by I got so few emails today. Then I started to go to the post office.
It was all good. It game me a chance to fix the door frame my dog had gnawed into oblivion. |

At the pool today...In Alabama our Governor and Chief Justice sent a memo and Order earlier this month to all State employees declaring today a holiday so my office is closed.
|
No holiday here in my office . As a dentist I close for the standard holidays as people seem to have ingrained in their minds that we are closed on those holidays ; for these other holidays people assume we are going to be open or are opened and we get slammed with appointments on these " other " holidays months in advance. My staff who have been with me for years don 't care about it because we work 4 day weeks ( M - Th ) every week and are used to our holiday schedule .
|
I try to close on Fridays during the summer (or at least half-day) but this month my court and deposition schedule won't allow for it.
|
We had today off, but I like what my sister's company did - they could choose today or the day after Thanksgiving.
|
Self employed. And I was closed today. I’m completely 100% “non-woke”, but I’m down with Juneteenth...
|
My office is in Washington, D.C. though I now work full from home. My company is owned by two women of color so we had the day off. I am a minority in my company, being the only male, though one of 3 Caucasians. We do stay open on Emancipation Day (April 20) which is a D.C. holiday.
|
I’m on shift, so I was on yesterday, though our day staff had yesterday off.
