SOT: Antiques Roadshow Baseball Cards
Watched an episode of Antiques Roadshow last night (original airdate in 2018). A lady brought in 3 cards from her husband's collection that had been kept in a bag in their attic. The appraiser said he pulled out three cards to put on the show: '52 Mantle and Robinson, and a '54 Wilson Wieners Williams. I've never heard of the appraiser (which may not be saying much), but he referred to the Mantle as "his rookie card." Nuff said....
But, IMHO, when they first showed the cards, I thought "reprint." True it was hard to tell from a tv camera shot, but I thought I also noticed a slight bat-wing on the upper left corner of the Mantle card. I assume (I know, I know), that the appraiser could tell a reprint from the original, but calling the Mantle "his rookie card" made me question his knowledge. I'm sorry they didn't show more of the "bagged" collection. Anyway, thought the members here would like to see for themselves. Here's the link. The lady with the cards shows up at about 28 minutes into the segment. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/wa...en-bay-hour-3/ |
The 52 mantle must be his rookie card.
Otherwise why else would Goldin, REA, Huggins & Scott, etc., say so? https://goldin.co/item/1952-topps-31...sa-good-2sdk7a (in the title) https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...?itemid=109073 (in the description) https://hugginsandscott.com/cgi-bin/...l?itemid=61236 (in the title) |
It is his Topps rookie card. You can get into schemantics all you want.

Heck, aren't '33 Goudeys actually Ruth's rookie cards as well? :D

Antiques Road Show cards
I saw the same episode last night, as well. I think think they are real.

See everyone, JollyElm doesn't have a stranglehold on this type of hobby word creation. Brian |
489. Technicalithief (also Pinielling Lies (colloquialism))
A seller deceptively calling a card a rookie card (which it technically is), when the player’s actual rookie card was the one he was pictured on in a previous year. See also: Enemasquerade - getting screwed over by not realizing that this card is a faux rookie card. |
So which card in the 1959 set would be Ted William's Fleer rookie? [emoji1]

Dammit, he does indeed have a stranglehold.

Since the 1952 card was mentioned, I'll also add this...:D
23. Mycophant (also Twenty Four/#7) A person who only cares about cards, memorabilia or topics associated with their reverence for and obsession with Mickey Mantle. See also: Micrepresentation - the refusal to acknowledge the fact you only want Mantle cards because of their huge resale value and potential return on investment (ROI). See also: Inmantleize - once again condescendingly referring to basic Mickey Mantle card facts that we’ve heard a million times before, i.e., “The 1952 Topps is not his rookie card,” or “The 1965 Topps World Series Game 3 ‘Mantle's Clutch HR’ card actually shows him missing the pitch...and it wrongly shows Bob Gibson pitching in that game!!!” |
Would you call the 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan card his ROOKIE CARD!?!?!?!? Dude was in the league for 2 years already when that card came out??? We can do this all day.

This shows you that there are still cards out there just waiting to be found. Keep hunting guys!!
