June Pickup thread

Pretty cool 1953 Giants team check. Possible a ticket refund. signed by Horace Stoneham. FS in the future
|
Bobby Hofman was a player, so perhaps it was issued for another reason? It's too round of a figure to be a regular payroll check, I'd think.
|
It would be an expense or royalty check.
I have some of these laying around, 1 player I know I have is Johnny Antonelli. The others I'd have to look for |

Sharing a few pickups this month. Thanks to Jim Stinson for the Duncan, Dubuc and Clarke. The Walsh is in tough shape but dual signed and added note on back to include "Baseball Hall of Fame Cooperstown NY".
|
A couple of recent pick ups.

Congrats Stuart! Those are some great additions.
|
Thanks Jon. Pretty happy to pick these up. I’m always looking for postmarked GPC’s of Hall of Famers but they are getting harder to find.
|
As a fan of women in sports, I couldn't not get this. The first MLB-affiliated game coached by a woman. I bought it raw the day after the game (where it was signed) and just got it back from PSA. Not sure what warranted the 8, but whatever.

Jim Tobin vintage signed card
1 Attachment(s)
I just picked up this vintage signed Jim "Abba Dabba" Tobin card from net54 board member Jim Stinson.
Jim Tobin had an amazing 1944 season. He pitched two no-hit games. One was an official no-hitter, while the other was a 5-inning no-hit effort that was the 2nd game in a D/H that preceded lights in Boston. Tobin was also a prolific HR hitter for a pitcher, hitting 17 dingers in a 10-yr. career including hitting 3 HR's in a game (MLB record) in 1942 against the Chicago Cubs. Tobin's autograph is desirable and tough in my experience. It took me over a decade to find my first example for my advanced no-hit pitcher autograph collection. I'm a sucker for fountain pen autographs and this beautiful (circa late 1930's) example certainly fits the bill. I'm glad to own it. |
Great pickups Jon and Scott . . .
.
. . . hope you enjoy them as much as I have over the years. Jon, I feel the Nig Clarke signed GPC is extra special as while there are a handful of printed name GPC in the hobby, this signed GPC and a signed team sheet cut are the only two signed examples I have personally encountered over the years. |
.
Scott, Agreed that Jim Tobin is tougher; most especially on a 3x5 or GPC. I considered him the fourth or fifth toughest to locate of 1945 Detroit Tigers ball players (Hack Miller, Joe Hoover, Prince Oana, Jim Tobin, George Caster, …). Don’t be fooled by all of the signed Joe Hoover items out now. Nearly all of those were mine, and accumulated over 25-30 years of collecting. Most came from an estate. It has been fun. |
For a guy who died young nearly 70 years ago, Caster is surprisingly easy to procure. Not sure how to explain it, but there are a handful of 1930's players who all passed away as fairly young men in 1955, all of whom were prolific signers for how easily they have been found over the years:
George Caster Frankie Hayes Johnny Stone Lynn Nelson Clint Brown I first noticed this strange phenomenon many years ago. I may even be forgetting a name on that list. Availability of some of them may wane just a little bit, but then bounce back later on, but all can always be found without much effort. Stone may be slightly harder to find than the others, but he's still not difficult. Now, if you want something nice a opposed to a standard cut or multi-signed album page, that's a different story. |
A few highlights of recent purchases. I know everyone is wary of signed t206 cards but this went thru Paul (t206collector) so it should be safe. Don't see this Hornsby pose signed alot so decided to pick it up, and Kariya is one of my favorite athletes so can never have too many.
I still haven't found a Ruth, was underbidder on another Ruth check in Lelands. Prolly lost to another dealer or someone who buys it for 6k and a month later put it up for 10k. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...58587643ae.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b041a2942b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...4f12825e85.jpg Sent from my SM-G781U using Tapatalk |

Thanks for recently offering up some of these challenging names to the hobby! I totally agree about Tobin. FYI, I do have a really nice signed GPC and index card, but this fountain pen early beauty really caught my eye. |
