June 2022 New Pickups Thread
1 Attachment(s)
I guess I'll start this new months pickup thread!
It's been very sparse pickings in Eastern Iowa but I did pickup this dogear football helmet this afternoon. I think late teens but I am stumped on the chinstrap on this thing. Can't find a comp on it. The laces match up to the other cloth pattern on the brow strap. I think it was adjusted to some of the ear pad holes but the strap have very similar slot holes to the helmet. My question is, is the chinstrap a later addition? There is a maker mark but it's hard to read. Stamp is in an oval. On bottom of oval it states Sporting Goods. I think is says Schmidters Kansas City,MO but can't get a real read on it. Any help would be appreciated! |
It would appear that the slots below are for the chin strap. It looks like someone shoved the strap through the earholes.

Picked up 2 Globe Baseball mugs. I've always loved these mugs. I was looking for one of these for years and couldn't find any for sale. Now I pick up 2 in the same week.

Beautiful Boggs bat. Technically I picked these three up in Pittsburgh the end of May. They were finally delivered yesterday. Examples of all three tend to be tough. The Charlie Sands has a 1967 Adirondack center brand. That was his first season, he played in one game and had one at bat. I love the pine tar on the Davalillo. The Jackie Hernandez has me pretty excited as it is a 1971 World Series issued bat. Which makes it very rare and extra meaningful in my collection.

I don't pick much up along you guys level, but when I get something I like, why not.
NFS at this time. I am extremely pleased to get this: photo of fans swarming the field on 9-23-1908. That of course is the date of the INFAMOUS Merkle Game. This is stamped w a pair of more modern stamps, but also an old one. It is definitely an early photo. The Brown Brothers are still in existence and have been since 1904, having done multitudes of famous photos. Their website gives a great history. |

That's a great photo Scott. Have you managed to spot any of the players in that melee?
I was pleased to get this DiMaggio Star of Tomorrow Calendar for a very reasonable price. |

I just bought these from a Cincinnati Reds baseball group. I thought they were neat. "Cincinnati 1961 NL Champs." Seller thought they were stadium shop items sold in 62.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6ee43ea257.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d12cbd0575.jpg

I was real happy go get this shot of Jackie in Montreal in June 1946, chilling out on the steps of building he and Rachel lived in.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/40371751007...&segname=11021 while I doubt that all the Gould statues would have been used on these "trophies" I have or have seen quite a few of them and they all are based on the Gould's |

Not a game used piece but I was excited to add Miggy to my 500 homerun club ball. The folks at Tigers Authentics were a pleasure to work with! Barry Bonds is the only player left to complete the ball. I have no idea how to obtain him.

thanks for the info!

Hey thanks! Bonds is the only guy I need on the ball- except for Ruth, Foxx and Ott! The sloppiest signature is Manny's, by far! I wonder if Ken Goldin will have a signing with Bonds? Otherwise I have no idea where to get him.

Perhaps the truest measure of a Basketball GOAT is how many championships his teams won. For their total careers, Chamberlain won 2 NBA Championships, whereas Russell won 11 NBA Championships. During the 10 years (1960-1969) both were in the NBA, Wilt one 1 of his 2 Championships, in 1967 over Russel's Celtics; Russell's Celtics won the other 9 NBA Championships during this decade! I rest my case, your Honor. |

Stumbled upon this. Seriously. Not even kidding. Bought a St Louis Browns Program/Scorecard, no mention of ticket, it arrived in the mail, to my surprise there was a ticket taped on the back cover.
Ticket is from August 29, 1951, NY Yankees at St Louis Browns https://www.baseball-reference.com/b...95108290.shtml Significance: Mickey Mantle's only career Home Run off........Satchel Paige! The kid (age 19) hits a 3 run shot (450 ft.) off the old master (age 45) with 2 outs in the 9th inning. So many unique things about this: Mantle's 2nd HR wearing #7 His 9th career HR His 1st HR off a future HOFer His 1st HR off a former Negro Leaguer His one & only HR off the legendary Satchel Paige Last, there are no tickets from the game (8/25/51 NY@Clev.) he hits his first HR wearing #7 graded by PSA, and none from this game (8/29/51 NY@St.L) graded by PSA so this "could be" the earliest Mantle #7 HR ticket in existence..... .....that was sitting for 70 years taped to the back of scorecard. |
I collect anything Lou Criger so was excited to see this pop up on eBay recently. From a Billiard Parlor owned by battery mates Lou Criger and Pitcher George Cuppy.
