How many different cards do you own?

In my trading group, we have a fun competition about how many different cards someone owns. The only rule is that you can't count multiple copies of the same card (Example, if you own 10 1933 Goudey Bengoughs, card 1, that would only count once).

How many do you own (if you know)? I own over 5,000 cards.

Casey2296 06-01-2022 12:10 PM

I have a very specific list of the cards I want in my collection, currently 700 +/-

clydepepper 06-01-2022 12:13 PM

After selling off most of my vintage cards, I probably still have around 3K, but most are PostWW2. Probably, four or five times that in '81-present issues (the true addiction portion).

NiceDocter 06-01-2022 12:14 PM

depends

Depends who is answering...... MY WIFE...... too many. ME ..... not enough! the reality.... WAY TOO MANY BUT MORE COMING SOON ANYHOW!!!!

jchcollins 06-01-2022 12:17 PM

5,000? 7,000?

Hard to say really. The bulk would be junk wax era from pack pulls as a kid that I still have in a 3,200 count box (and smaller ones) in the closet.

The bulk of my collection that I care about today (vintage stars, and sets I'm working on) is much smaller - maybe less than 1500 cards.

darwinbulldog 06-01-2022 12:18 PM

If you count all the junk wax, probably about 5,000. If you just count the ones I've picked up in the years since I discovered eBay and Net54, probably about 800.

BobbyStrawberry 06-01-2022 12:18 PM

456. (Not counting some big groups of common cards)

Johnny630 06-01-2022 12:37 PM

tiger8mush 06-01-2022 12:42 PM

rough guesstimate:

pre-war - 750
post-war vintage - 250
modern (mostly late '80s from childhood) - 5k

steve B 06-01-2022 12:47 PM

I haven't counted since maybe 1974...

I'm thinking around 50,000, maybe more.

butchie_t 06-01-2022 12:52 PM

you asked......

I stopped counting at 25k

B.T.

Arazi4442 06-01-2022 12:57 PM

Like most people here, the vast majority are junk wax - if you count those then about 10k.

If I count what I would call just cards in "my collection" probably 150-200

G1911 06-01-2022 01:16 PM

Pre-war baseball: ~250
Post-war baseball vintage - ~25,000
Pre-War Tobacco - 11,732

Just total cards: Probably 250K. I have a lot of junk wax, a lot of non-sports, a lot of cheap stuff that accumulates...

John1941 06-01-2022 01:16 PM

Most of it's junk wax, but I have somewhere between 15K and 20K, and my dad has another 15K or so. My real collection is more like 3500 cards.

scotgreb 06-01-2022 01:18 PM

460 in my collection (340 hall-of-famers + 120 significant others). Scott

Knowing your collection Jeff best wishes on your goal by the end of the year.

Foo3112 06-01-2022 01:39 PM

I currently own 12 PSA graded cards. I am very specific as to what I collect. I use to own a lot more but decided to sell many over the years in order to get that one card I wanted instead (at that moment).

As for PSA/DNA, perhaps around 30.

Then I have quite a bit of raw cards stored in boxes and about another 2K signed by players and sitting on card savers.

jchcollins 06-01-2022 01:46 PM

Maybe slightly off-topic, but related -

Would you rather have a smaller collection of more valuable cards? Or a larger collection (whatever is "large" to you is open to interpretation...) of cards with a lower average value?

I lean towards postwar vintage because I like getting a mid grade HOF'er for the same price as it would cost me to get a beater T206 common or other prewar card. I like the idea of prewar, but the value proposition simply isn't there for me, or wasn't in 2014 or so when I got back into the hobby and set goals this go-round.

I have my limits. Here lately it seems I would rather have fifteen $100 cards than one $1500 card...but I have also sold things in the past to do the opposite.

Smarti5051 06-01-2022 01:56 PM

I have about 35-50K different cards, but the vast majority of them add up to about $20 in total value (if I could find a local guy with a van and bad judgment).

And, to answer the other question posed, I would desperately love to have a few PC cards rather than the motley crew of childhood bad judgment that currently resides in the garage. My life goal is to trade away what I have for a few binders of great vintage GOATs.

LOL, nice way to put it. I still smile on the Gregg Jefferies and Todd Van Poppel cards that I occasionally run across in my collection. Those dudes were supposed to have made me a retiree by now...:D

Vintage Vern 06-01-2022 04:34 PM

With all these cards people have I still can't pry 1 Vern Clemons card from anyone here.

I’ve never counted before either, until this thread was posted. Pretty easy for me to count as I keep all my transactions in a spreadsheet.

Thanks Phil

I just do not know if this is a realistic or stretch goal.

I have no friggin' idea, except that my worldwide boxing type card collection is well over 1,000 unique type cards and covers dozens of countries and every continent except Antarctica.

birdman42 06-01-2022 08:40 PM

Up through '41 Play Ball, 295 counting everything--cards, pins, blankets, etc. After that, maybe a couple thousand Washington 42-71. Currently putting together a '53 set on the cheap.

familytoad 06-01-2022 09:33 PM

Familytoad counts

Prewar baseball =1600 in sets. A few hundred singles for which I’m not collecting the set.
Postwar baseball =17,500
Postwar football = 5600
Postwar hockey = 1000

1971 Topps FB = 14,000+ (not counting in totals above)

So about 24,000 unique vintage cards.
I don’t have as much junk wax left. Bad judgment cards =10,000 down from 10x that amount.

tonyo 06-02-2022 06:16 AM

11,000+/-

540 prewar
520 post war thru 1969
2100 70's
1750 80's
3500 90's
1000 football mostly 80's and 90's
700 bball 80's and 90's
900 90's 2000's for sale on ebay

MuncieNolePAZ 06-02-2022 06:25 AM

18 pre-war baseball cards although most have multiple backs.
5 post-war vintage baseball cards
5 modern cards (Andruw Jones and Ronald Acuna Jr)
51 modern basketball cards (all FSU player autos/RC)

Chad

midmo 06-02-2022 09:10 AM

Not really sure but I'd guess 700+ pre-war and 20k+ postwar/modern.
