Help - raw Cobb look legit or no?

Hello all

I made a connection with another collector who just asked my opinion about the authenticity of this Cobb - I am no expert but know we have many here!

Thoughts about this one? He said it’s an auction from government surplus/seizure

Thx for your advice…. Personally, no way would I trust it to be real without being graded or authenticated.

Your thoughts?? Thx! Jeff

it's not authentic, the Red Cobb wasn't printed with a 150 back.

No shot that is real!
The front is blurry and appears artificially aged, IMO.

I could be wrong, but I believe that little black dot/burn looking mark is something found on t206 reprints.

You guys are amazing with your knowledge.. I’ll pass this along to the other collector. I was pretty sure you’d have very helpful and specific advice - am never disappointed here

Thx again - Net54 pays it forward again!

Jeff

It's a matter of experience really. To any normal person I'm sure it just looks like what a T206 looks like, but to anyone who has spent hundreds of hours looking at T206s (like most of us here) it's a ridiculously bad fake.

As far as difficulty level, it's like asking me if I can tell the difference between two of my own family members' faces versus asking me if I can tell the difference between two houseflies.

I can't believe I'm an adult who's not asking this question about a place on his arm...

Does anyone have any more details on the dot? This'll help id repros and repros-turned-fakes.
  • What's it look like in close-up? For example, the color and printing process.
  • Is the placement always the same?
  • Is it found across all brands?

This is not a factual statement as to there being a dot on numerous reprints. It just so happens to be on this one. There are hundreds of versions of fake cobbs.

Signs like that are not really what should be looked for generally, as was mentioned previously, this card has as much similarity to a real Cobb as a Fiero has with a Ferrari. The issue is that to my wife, the Fiero is the same as a Ferrari.

Education with these cards and handling many is how to learn, if that has not been done please ask or buy graded. While neither solution is guaranteed to be right, it’s better than a guess. Also, as the saying goes…if it’s too good to be true, it likely isn’t.

And it "just happens" to be on this one, and this one, and so on...they are somewhat prevalent on fake Cobbs that tend to look slightly "better" as far as reprints go. Just one more tool to put in the box.

There are multiples of hundreds of thousands of fake Cobbs more than real in circulation and you can easily buy them by the hundreds in lots. This particular printer of fakes has this, one printer in thousands is not more than an afterthought. If you would like to use it that is fine, I feel it dangerous to provide a notation found on .01% that could make the unknowing feel more comfortable in thinking the other 99.99% real.

Simply my belief.

I don't think anyone was saying "it's only fake if there's a dot on it." If one was leaning toward that sentiment, they know little to nothing of the t206 world, and need much more education. Going back to the original card being questioned, I was simply pointing out that 1. It is a reprint and 2. At any given time there are numerous being sold on Ebay.

That's all

I understand that not all reprints are this easy to figure out...but really...this is the best first step! It is 100% not real if the original wasn't printed with the back in question.

Thanks, Justin and Ryan.

The Piedmonts, Sweet Caps, and dots in different location answer what I'm getting at in that we have to be wary of bleaching in any location for this particular publication. Easy when it's in-hand, but pictures of stuff being sold aren't always at the resolution I'd like. Even seemingly decent, non-blurry pictures.
