I will start this show with "Chick" Gandil......

I recommend a well written book on this subject titled "RED LEGS and BLACK SOX", by Susan Dellinger. Susan's source for the events in that BB season of 1919 are her Grandparents.....HOFer Edd Roush. . https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...v460%20_3_.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...460b%20_2_.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |

"Sleepy" Bill Burns.
16 year old me first heard the name in Eight Men Out. Christopher Lloyd turned in a very good performance and brought the character to life. I have never been able to separate the two. |
Ted,
Although he was considered to be uninvolved, "Cocky" Eddie Collins, did hit a measly .226 that world series. I really need to work on my prewar collection! https://i.imgur.com/qMXQk10.jpg?1 |

"Knuckles" Cicotte, the grossly underpaid White Sox star pitcher, lost 2 of his 3 starts in the 1919 World Series. He was the first of the 8 men to confess his participation in the scandal.

On his way back to Chicago after a game in Boston, Chick Gandil met with a group of gamblers at the Ansonia. The rest, as we say, is history.

Joe Jackson
In the 8 games of the 1919 World Series his stats are..... AB = 32 BA = .375 H = 12 HR = 1 RBI = 6 OPS = .956 Does his batting performance look like he "he was in on the fix" ? ? Furthermore, his fielding performance in the Outfield was great (including throwing-out runners trying to score at Home Plate). .https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...duSR%20_2_.jpg . https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...JacksonNOb.jpg Joe Jax card courtesy Scot Reader TED Z T206 Reference . |

Black Sox
Great stuff guys, never enough Black Sox for me ! Although not cards thought you guys would like to see these Sox related pieces. First a full page newspaper, The Boston Post from Sept. 1920 only one day after Cicotte and Jackson first confessed to being crooked. Second a rather unique auto of one of the scandals ring leaders, Arnold "Chick" Gandil.

Great to hear from you, Steve That was an old scan taken with my old scanner 14 years ago. Here is a scan of the PIEDMONT and SOVEREIGN Gandil's taken this evening with my new scanner. The SOVEREIGN version has just a tinge of red (or is it pink ink). .https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...v460%20_2_.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...460b%20_2_.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |

I guess my uncertainty is that without being in the room that the discussions were happening, some of who was or wasn't involved is hearsay. Were there multiple, definitive, under oath statements that cleared Collins from any suspicion? |
Am a bit embarrassed to admit that I'm not sure if this photo is mine or that I just scabbed the jpeg from the internet. My collection is a tad disorganized. Either way Happy Landis belongs in this thread.

Charles A. "Chick" Gandil. First baseman for the Washington Senators in 1912-1915. 1,176 hits and 151 stolen bases in 9 MLB seasons. 1917 World Series champion. He led AL first baseman in fielding percentage 4 times. He debuted with the Chicago White Sox in 1910. His best season was 1913 with Washington as he posted a .363 OBP with 72 RBI's and 22 stolen bases in 603 plate appearances. He finished his career with the Chicago White Sox in 1917-1919. He is best known as the "ringleader" of the players involved in the 1919 Black Sox scandal.
From Gandil's SABR biography: Prior to his infamous involvement in the 1919 Black Sox Scandal, Chick Gandil was one of the most highly regarded first basemen in the American League, both for his play on the field and his solid work ethic. In 1916 a Cleveland newspaper described Gandil as “a most likeable player, and one of excellent habits.” From 1912 to 1915 the right-handed Gandil starred for the Washington Senators, leading the club in runs batted in three times and batting .293. In the field Gandil paced American League first sackers in fielding percentage four times and in assists three times. He continued his strong work with the Chicago White Sox from 1917 to 1919, helping the club to two American League pennants before forever tarnishing his legacy by helping to fix the 1919 World Series. Yet Gandil may have been the only banished player who gained more than he lost from the fix. After the 1919 World Series, the first baseman retired from major-league baseball, reportedly taking $35,000 in cash with him. https://www.net54baseball.com/attach...1&d=1649866424 https://www.net54baseball.com/attach...1&d=1649866428 |

I am sure you can google and find more history about it. But other were suspended for life for their roles and he was not. He not only was not suspended but kept playing to a great HOF career. Remember technically the 8 were acquitted in the courts but Landry the New Commisioner took the facts he had in front of him and made his decision. And the rest is history |
David, I always thought this was a great photo of Landis...I sometimes like to attach it to my posts to make sure my disgust/disapproval is properly and effectively expressed.

In any sad tale, there needs to be an antagonist that pushes individuals to extreme, regretful measures. Charles Comiskey serves in this capacity for the Black Sox, and shall be known forever in this thread as the 'Tightwad Disgruntler of the Disgruntled'.
Brian (M101 blank back, either M101-4 or M101-5...who knows). Post-script...Todd knows! It is a M101-4. Because in M101-4, Comiskey has his name spelled correctly, while in M101-5, his last name is missing the 'e'. I have just enough of the bottom of this card to make this identification. Thanks Todd! |

In the 1960's, Chick Gandil was interviewed by a Sports writer regarding his Chicago White Sox teammates. Gandil's comment about Buck Weaver......is interesting: "At 3rd Base he was an aggressive, snappy type. A good hitter, he always knew the latest jokes, was a master bench jockey and a scrapper, as Billy Martin is today." https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...460x%20_2_.jpghttps://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...erRC%20_2_.jpghttps://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...illyMartin.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |
