Topps 1991
|
I don't have the same fascination with 91' as many others do, 85' is my jam and the many variations and releases.
However, I admit to having a 10 Clemens in base and DS simply because I just absolutely love the photo. The last of an era for sure and amazing photography. |

It may be a thing for a lot of sets, I found some 83s the other day that were the same way. |
I had quit buying Topps packs in 88...and just bought the complete sets. But in 1991 that changed as I certainly bought into the "chase" of vintage cards. I can remember getting box after box from Costco...who knows how many I opened and I still have all those unsearched in boxes stored deep in a closet.
Awesome article, and when he mentioned the one fellow who only got 1 1968 common I do feel fortunate I did hit a vintage card. I got a 1970 Cito Gaston (semi high number) and was pretty stoked when I hit that. Problem was it's massive miscut!! Mint, but wow, why would they insert that? For my master 1970 Topps set I do have that Cito in the binder as it's pretty cool I opened a pack with a 1970 Topps card, my birth year. |
Here is the 1970 Topps card I pulled in a 1991 Topps pack -
https://i.ibb.co/1b10CJ6/70-Cito.jpg I never put that set together, I probably have a couple in those boxes...future project... |
I ripped a few boxes in 1991, but didn't find anything. My luck anyway would have produced a checklist from the 1990 set.
I can remember hearing a lot of "my buddy in Peoria got the Yount rookie", "that's nothing - my dentist's cousin in Spokane nabbed the '57 Ted Williams", and so on and so on. |
Thanks for posting that article - very fun read. I bought 2 wax boxes back in the day and have since purchased two more. I still don't have a complete set, and I never pulled any vintage card. Got the Boyd error though.
I wonder how many of the vintage cards are still out there? There's certainly no shortage of unopened '91 Topps yet to be ripped. Did Topps ever publish a list of who won what? |

Was at a local card shop today and saw they had 36 ct boxes of 1991 Topps...so I bought 2 thinking about this thread. Will be opening them tonight...thought what the heck...relive some old glory. Should be fun!
https://i.ibb.co/8zy2vrD/1991-Topps-Boxes.jpg Edit to add - 72 packs, 1080 cards...no vintage and only 1 Chipper Jones...:) And LOTS of stale old gum! |
Variations ?

YES...I found an old thread here with a list and spent a little time today looking through them. So crazy...I found both versions of the Ron Kittle in the same box??? How can that be? Between both boxes I got all three versions of one of the Checklists?? I even found some with the "error", and some with the corrected. Haven't really sorted them to do a more thorough look but just found that all really odd.
I don't have an organized 1991 set but do have a bunch tucked away as well. I think I may try and grab those and with these see how close I can come to a complete set with variations. What is that worth? 10 bucks? HAHAHA...I will admit some of the photography is pretty awesome, and the Clemens and Ricky H cards are really cool... |

Yes, same box. And he glowing under UV ones along with regular ones in the same box too.

I enjoy those deeper looks at sets or even single cards
