Hinchliffe Stadium

Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, NJ is one of the two intact standing Negro League Stadiums. Many stars played there back in the day, including Monte Irwin, Josh Gibson, Oscar Charleston, Larry Doby and Cool Papa Bell. Being renovated as some of you may have heard. I stopped by this afternoon and snapped the below pictures. Can't go inside; active construction site.
Supposedly they have the money and it will happen. Fingers crossed. To my eyes seems like they have a lot of work to do. I know there has been some controversy where home plate will be situated. I hope for the sake of that community this comes to pass, one way or another.

Thanks, I have been meaning to take a drive to see it. It certainly was nice day to do it.

Talk about a cowinky dink. I literally JUST finished reading the article below about Hinchcliffe Stadium on NJ.com and here's a post about it. I've lived in NJ my while life and never even knew about it. Very cool that it's still standing and being renovated. The article states that they're hoping to host a Field of Dreams there down the road. How cool would that be?

Its actually Hinchliffe.

I grew up in Paterson and went to a few Eastside-Kennedy football games there in the late 1970's. It was a shithole back then, then was abandoned for a while. The Paterson Panthers played their home games there until they disbanded in 1950.

Glad to see it being renovated. Thanks for the photos, I haven't been down there in a while.

Would be awesome, but they better build some massive parking lots. There are homes like 75 feet from the walls of the stadium. Not sure how logistically that bottleneck of an area handles thousands of cars.

Back in 2016, I saw this item as one piece in an entire display case of a local bar that was closing. All of the contents were being auctioned off. I could not determine if the poster was a reproduction but in my research I learned quite a bit about Hinchcliffe Stadium.

I believe the selling point behind the renovations, has to do with the MLB officially recognizing the Negro Leagues. I know Harold Reynolds has made a big push for the renovation and wants a "Field of Dreams" type of game held there.

I'm all for preserving the history of our game. Far too many stadiums have been destroyed and replaced. I think also today, many of the stadiums just don't have any character. New Yankee Stadium is a perfect example of this. Just a soulless, lifeless, corporate, graveyard.

Well after reading that article, I now can visit both parks as my oldest just committed to go to Alabama and we will be flying into Birmingham a fair amount.

Great stuff and great history thanks for sharing

IF you live near there keep the pictures coming over time

But you are right the parking needs to be addressed to make it a success

Thanks for the post. My grandfather raced motorcycles at Hinchcliffe back in the mid 30’s. Hope they make it work.
