1971 opc

I completed my regular 1971 Topps set 25 plus years ago. And I always liked the 1971 OPC set, with those crazy colored backs, but just never got serious about chasing it. Well a just arrived 117 card lot (#523 and below), combined with what I already had in my box, and I'm off!

If I was ever going to try to complete a vintage OPC set it would be either 1971 or 1974. 1971 has different pics of some players, different teams of some players, has the same amount of cards as the Topps set, and most of the cards have completely different backs. I much more prefer the back color of the 1974 OPC cards over 1974 Topps and it would be a challenge to complete that set. 1977 OPC would be my favorite OPC set if it wasn’t so much smaller than 1977 Topps, it has several different photos and team changes and even players not in the 1977 Topps set. I bought a cheap 1977 OPC set on eBay years ago.

Nice, I’m around 190 short (all above 523j of completing the set. Quite challenging to find them

I especially like the high numbers that share the same back design as the Topps set, but with the bold yellow stock. I've been waiting for a big lot of low grade cards to come my way before starting the set, I have maybe ~60 or so cards. the 71's are my favorite front design of the 70's baseball issues

Great set to choose next Larry! Good luck in your quest to finish it!

The set is a BEAST!!

A whole other world from its Topps counterpart. A challenge that should keep you busy for quite some time! Good luck! Awesome set BTW.

I noticed the advertisement for the player booklet in one of the wrapper variations in the image at top - was Topps using their left-overs from 1970 baseball? Did they insert the previous year's inserts in the OPC set typically?

search "1971 OPC pack break" on youtube and when the pack is opened right on top is the gum followed by a 1970 Story Booklet. On ebay there are several 1970 OPC Story Booklets for sale, but the trademark on the back is printed T.C.G. How does the seller know they are OPC booklets?

My understanding they are Topps booklets no difference at all. Left over from Topps so they aren’t OPC booklets but I guess a Canadian who opened them in 1971 could claim they are OPC. 😀
