Question about Unopened 1955 Topps/OPC Cards

Net 54:

I never had any 1955 Topps baseball wax packs for sale so never knew there was a difference between packs sold in the U.S. and those sold in Canada. It looks like the 5 cent packs sold in Canada look just like the ones sold in the U.S. but the U.S. undated and dated carries a line outside the green border that states they were printed in N.Y. Made and printed in the U.S. So they used the same wrappers in the U.S. and Canada except for that one-line difference?

My next question: Was there a different checklist for the 1955 OPC baseball cards or is it the same as the U.S. version? Remember that in 1954, the OPC cards had a checklist of 50 cards and did not have the superstar rookies in them. If the checklist is exactly the same than their value is equivalent -- maybe?

It doesn't help the hobby that the auction houses make incorrect statements regarding the 1954 OPC packs that indicate improperly that you can find a 1954 Aaron or a Kaline or a Banks in their 4-card pack. They also claim that a Canadian 1955 is a U.S. 1955 and vice versa.

Maybe it is the grading companies making that mistake - and the auction houses buying in for larger profits -- but there are many examples online of incorrect labeling and statements.

Either way, does anyone know if the U.S. Topps 1955's are in fact the same as the Canadian OPC released 1955's?

Thanks,

Steve

There's no OPC cards in '55, just Topps in Canadian wrappers. Usually the nickel Canadian packs indicates 4 cards but in 55 it seems they don't but do indicate Young Canada's Favorite in the Bazooka ad. I don't think they sold penny packs in Canada, maybe someone can confirm this. OPC and Topps started diverging in 1965 in baseball.

Dave,

Picked up last week a sealed dated 1955 Canadian 5 cent baseball wax pack. Really cool and far better condition than most of the Topps 1955's I have seen, including the two that I have. Check it out if I still have it in Atlantic City.
