Goodwill Auction
 

An buddy of mine sent me a link to this Goodwill auction a few days ago. He wondered if I wanted to in on this mystery lot with him. I said no, I don't gamble like that. The auction was less than $1k at the time. I've been watching the insanity since. This sold for $80k..... WTH!!!!

I wanted to post about it but didn't want to out while still open, in case my uneducated self was missing something. What are your thoughts on this? I'm just blown away.

Labeled set of what? I don't gamble like that either. It would have been nice if Goodwill had laid flat some of the items that weren't wrapped.

Read what is on the envelopes.

My buddy emailed them for more pictures and this is what they sent.

Pictures didn't make me feel any better about the lot.

I wonder why Goodwill wouldn't open the packages up and spread out some of the contents of the envelopes. Talk about not knowing what you're buying. :rolleyes:

Those are APBA baseball envelopes.
One of the groups feature the all time greatest franchise teams (16 franchises at the time they were issued , probably 1979-1980 if my shaky memory is correct.

Inside are APBA cards of great players. While I loved the game as a teenager and it spawned my lifelong collection obsession, these aren’t baseball trading cards.
The other envelopes that aren’t APBA probably don’t have cards in them either.

I think someone is about to get their feelings hurt.

To this day I swear I was able to will double 6s to come up in clutch situations. With all its imperfections and I am sure with much more baseball and statistical sophistication they would really seem glaring now, it was a massively cool game. The cards presumably are worthless lol.

They aren't worthless. They are apparently worth $80K! :eek:

There is a 0% chance this bid is actually being paid by the "winner".

This reminds me of an episode of Storage Wars with the mystery locker full of closed boxes where one of the bidders Barry always over paid in hopes of finding the one big score. Only to ripping them all opened and dumped on ground and him walking away cursing

They have the decimal in the wrong place. Or the comma should be a decimal. I think they meant to say the lot sold for $80.02

...but probably not the crazy auction ending value in the Goodwill auction. The total weight of the package was 27 lbs., however. That is a fair amount of APBA cards.

Ah, worst case some rich dude made a very nice donation to Goodwill and gets a tax write off.

Now about the guy paying over $140,000 for the Jasson Dominguez refractor . . . .

i "inherited" a huge APBA collection maybe 8 years ago...sold for about 3K piecemeal. The non baseball stuff sold for the most.

That was my first guess. Those teams go from early 20th into later 20th teams

Complete teams in the envelopes sell for a few bucks, we get them from time to time. We try to include them with a full game when possible.
