T206 Ty Cobb Hindu Red...
1 Attachment(s)
Did anyone else see this one get swooped up on Ebay the other day? Even with the condition, feel like $1500 was a steal. Any thoughts?
|
It looked real to me, word is it will be either re-listed or sent to a larger AH. Seller did not go through with the sale.
|
Good to know Chris. Feel better knowing I didn't miss out on that opportunity.
|
Not that I have any dog in the fight, but this card got a lot of attention immediately after the sale. I wish people would hold off on discussions like that until the sale had a chance to be completed. The buyer pretty much got screwed out of a huge opportunity.

Some years back wasn't there a Red Portrait Cobb w/Red Hindu back that came up and then was proven fake? Anyone happen to do a comparison of these two cards to see if it was altered to look this way now. Isn't there an unwritten rule with Prewar that if its to good to be true it probably is. I believe that fake Cobb was at the 2012 National and was rebacked. I could just be imagining things too:rolleyes:
|
Andrew, not sure about the red Cobb/red hindu, but here are two threads I found quickly that reference a red cobb with a rebacked drum and a green cobb with red hindu. The second also references a red cobb with red Hindu that was questioned.

Assuming the card is authentic, I would not pay $1500 for the card, let alone more. The "value" is in the red hindu back and you can barely see anything, including no "Hindu". Personally, I would much rather have a complete and decent looking common-back red cobb for the same price it will cost to acquire this monster.

The original theory I heard was another 0 was intended to be in the price. Albeit sloppy, that would have been more understandable.
Cancelling the sale because you realized you could get ~8-10x the price - not a good look. |

I'm with Ryan. We both are (like many T206 collectors) rare back fanatics...However, no matter how rare the card is, if you can't see the brand name, or hardly much of the back, then what's the point?...It's also rather risky buying a high-profile card raw. (I posted in that old "Archive" thread from 2007 :)) |

For a card not graded, no one knows for sure if it is real. Guess all you want, no one knows.
So, what money was left on the table? Potentially someone gets ripped off? The risk is not the seller's, but the buyer's |
I would ask PSA to slab this as a “Hindu no Hindu” variation personally.

Remember the excitement when a BL 460 of Cobb was discovered a few years ago.

Cards like this make me feel a little sad knowing what they once were. Often I feel like it's more sad than cool to own them. But I would definitely want this one.

Holy Cow!
Holy Cow! I just read the old thread regarding the Red Hindu Cobb in a PSA 4 holder...
I was the one who consigned it to REA. I went through a nasty divorce in 2008 and I had to sell off all my collection in 2007 & 2008 as most of my liquidity was tied into the cards, photos, and postcards. You may recall the e125 set in REA in 2007 as well as several Boston Garters (locker room series) and a complete m110 set, Victory Cobb, etc... man o' man, divorce sucks! I got out of the hobby after the divorce but kept 1 card, the Red Hindu Cobb. I ended up selling it in REA a year or 2 later to help a friend who's business needed money. But I was not back into the hobby until 2016 or so. I would purchase a card here or there through auction but didn't consider myself "reactivated" until about 2016. I did not look at Net54 for several years after the divorce and had NO idea the Red Hindu caused that much controversy until just now, reading the above post. I bought it at a Chicago Sun-Times show from a dealer who was from California, I do not recall his name. A year or so after I sold it Lifson did tell me that there were many questions regarding the cards authenticity, etc. Was the card real? I have no idea. I never owned the card before it was graded, didn't have a chance to properly evaluate it myself (the ol' smell test never failed). It was in a slab BUT I had bought a PSA graded Cobb bat on & a PSA Cobb green (both with regular Hindu backs, not red) a few years earlier... they both turned out to be fake, re-backed. Fortunately, I got my money back as I paid $10K for the 2 which was a ton of money back then. Leon, thank you for not revealing me as the consignor. Yes, I did back out of the deal for the Red Hindu Cobb with you but I do recall you still got my d304 Martens Cobb? I give you 100% respect for keeping me anonymous. Many many thanks. Unfortunately I cannot afford 90% of the cards I sold back then, they've just taken off out of reach. |
A Victory Cobb!!!

the card looks good imo, I’ve seen regular beat up cobbs go for 2-3k with no back so 1,500 was probably a pretty good deal.

Do you have this card because its a Frankenstein? Would love to hear more about it. Didn't Wonka (John McDaniels?) have some controversy when these Red Hindus showed up? Circa 2009-2010. BTW, Jamie hope your doing good. Been a while. |
Andrew,
I have this card because its the real mccoy... One of only a handful known Red Cobbs with a Red Hindu back.. i also own that Victory Cobb which is shown in the messages above.. https://i.imgur.com/PMdrqT9h.jpg |
