1949 Bowman Jackie Roninson - Real or Fake?

I think it's fake, but I don't want to disclose why so as not to sway other opinions. I would appreciate your thoughts as to whether you think it's real or fake (and, if so, why)? Thanks!

This card is the exact reason why if I buy high end vintage, I buy graded. I would not be able to tell

Fwiw I don’t think it looks good. It seems artificially aged and the pixelation around his face looks a bit wrong. I’m not 100% certain though. It’s a free opinion in any event.

I don't like the look of the edges on all 4 sides, not to mention the back seems artificially aged. I vote not genuine.

I vote fake as well; it seems artificially aged, and the illustration just doesn't look right to me.

If it helps the effort, I cobbled together four different graded versions from eBay for comparison purposes...

That actually does help. Thank you! I didn't think '49 Bowman had the dot printing, but I can see that your examples have the dot printing as well. That makes me feel better.

There's one for sale at at local show. The dealer wants $500. In the condition that it's in, I still think it's a $1500-$2000 card. I have the dealers info, so if it does end up being a fake I can go back to him.

Others commented on the back looking artificially agaed. I noticed that too, but I think something may have happened to the back to make it appear like that. It's not like that on the front.

I found some other '49 Bowman here to compare it to and it feels like the other '49 Bowmans. We'll see.

I was going to be the contrarian who said he liked it. At $500 it's a good thing I don't know where it is, or you'd never get it :D

Hard for me to tell from the front, but the back looks bad. My vote is fake.

skelly423 01-08-2022 06:15 PM

I don’t know how to explain it, but certain cards just don’t look right to me. I can’t pinpoint anything specific, but this is one of those cards that doesn’t look right. Without seeing it in hand I’d stay away from this one

So this dealer. Is he selling all his cards for 1/3 of market prices?

Any updates?

chalupacollects 01-13-2022 10:08 AM

I thin k it is real as registration is off a little on the front. Why would you reprint it that way?

Good point.

Yeah, it will be going to PSA soon. I'm pretty sure it's real at this point, but it just makes more sense to grade it anyway to increase the resell value and give buyers a peace of mind.

i guess we can put this thread to rest for 10 - 12 months. It's a long road to PSA and back.

If the card you scan as your source material is out of register that isn't usually corrected, as the fakers are mostly lazy.

I sent my 50 Bowman Jackie to PSA to get slab even if altered (a legit seller had in a lucite for decades) and they screwed it up. So it hung out in CA for months for nothing....At least they didn't charge me. But now I will send it to SGC, so I'll get it back quickly. So take care in filling out PSA's form...

Yeah, they don't tell you that you need to put "SLAB AS AUTHENTIC OR AUTHENTIC ALTERED IF IT DOES NOT RECEIVE A NUMBER GRADE" on the form. You just have to know.

I vote real as well. The registration sucks but that back is just drawer worn and dirty. There is no alligatoring from a tea soak, without having it in hand I say good but just honest wear.

The "Goudey Ruth opinion" thread reminded me of this post. Thanks for all the replies. To close this out, the card was submitted to PSA and came back as a PSA 1 and was sold at the February TriStar show.
