Very cool that a not insignificant sum is being donated to the NLBM for each coin sold. This has to be a big deal for the museum.

It appears the only buying option now is presale on ebay or maybe coin dealers, nothing available through the Mint.

I may have misheard or read, but I believe this could make the museum around $6 million.

I was on the fence but knowing its supporting the museum pushed me clearly into being a buyer.

The US Mint prices are a fraction of what people are trying to gouge on ebay lol.

I'm all about melt weight for gold/silver. The approximate gold content/value for the $5 gold piece is about $400 (melt weight) assuming $1800/ounce for gold. At $674 for the coin, it's not too bad. The $5 coin would be at melt weight value if gold ever reached about $3000/ounce.

Aesthetically, that Rube Foster is fantastic.

I only own one modern commemorative and collect vintage coins otherwise, but the US Mint consistently puts out great looking coins IMO.

Agreed. I collect gold coins and wish the $5 piece also had "fine gold" " or ".900" written somewhere on the coin. That said, these 22k pieces are cool.

Only because at one time I collected all things Walter Johnson did I become aware of a "parallel universe" of coins--many 100% silver--of all-time great baseball players that have been issued over the past few decades. I call it a parallel universe because, other than the examples I would snag from time to time on Ebay or at shows, I literally never saw them before and never after. I don't know what explains their scarcity, perhaps there is just zero demand and therefore no market for them, but I've always thought they were way cool and make a nifty little sub-collection.

And there's this beauty, a pound of silver. When silver got up to $40 an ounce ten years ago, I sold mine!

Just ordered 4 silver coins tonight. Great idea for me who needs nothing for Birthday or Christmas. By the time they come, I will forgotten about them and they will be a great surprise.

I went to the US Mint page to check them out. Those are cool!

But then almost immediately my Facebook feed is filled with TONS of ads for all kinds of commemorative coins that I care nothing about. :rolleyes:
