Adjusting for inflation a fair amount for Joe D. should be about $500,000,000 in today's dollars for a 10 yr contract. He probably still would have taken the Mr. Coffee spokesman money as well. Bless his heart, Joe never met a nickel that he didn't like. Gotta love him.

He was pretty high in importance to his club. All he did that year was hit in 56 straight games. Then they spanked a good Dodgers team in 5 games. Red Ruffing said it best, "When you saw him standing out there, you knew you had a pretty darn good chance of winning the ballgame."

I met Joe DiMaggio at a BB card Show in New Jersey on July 17, 1982. We had a pleasant conversation while Joe signed several items for me.

I reminded him.... "41 years ago today, your famous 56-game hitting streak was stopped by the Cleveland Indians".

He looked at me with a :) and said.... "how do you remember this, you amaze me".

Ted, that had to be an incredible interaction. I've heard many things about Joe, both good and bad. Could only imagine what it would've been like to meet him. Is there a word for feeling wistful for a time you were never apart of? :D

Would love to hear some other stories of legends you've encountered over the years. Hope you've been well in the recent months.

A few thoughts:

Ted Z is a treasure. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting him in person. I just know from his posts. There is no doubt that he has more knowledge of the greatest era of baseball, and the stuff that goes with it (cards!) than just about anyone around.

That '41 Play Ball DiMaggio is a beautiful card. Is there a coincidence that his and Ted Williams' cards, with the year they had, are so perfect?

Shocked that these 2 cards aren't in the stratosphere in value (yet?).

If given a choice between Mantle or Joe D, and I can choose only one or the other, even though I love them both, I choose Joe.

I got my Joe D autographed OAL ball some years ago in Fort Lauderdale. It is signed "Joe DiMaggio" and "Yankee Clipper" in his hand. I am told the only time he did that was during signings at the children's hospital bearing his name. It is priceless to me.

An important woman pointed out that today is national spaghetti day. In case someone didn't know.

Hi James

Since 1981, I have been to several BB Card Shows that Joe D was signing at. Most of the time he was a very "private" person. Also, there were times (when he apparently knew the
person) and Joe was a very friendly guy.

James, perhaps I'll start a thread where we could reminisce about Sports figures which we have had some interesting conversations with. I could fill up several pages with my stories.

Although, I'm a Yankees fan (from birth :) ) Ted Williams was one of my favorites to watch on TV when I was a kid (1949 - 1960). I would root for him to hit HR's.
In a conversation with Ted Williams (circa 1984), Ted asked me why I would root for him (my being a Yankees fan). I replied...."I knew that the Yankees would win
at the end of the season, anyway. Ted got a big laugh at that response.

With the incredible card prices these days, one incredible value in memorabilia remains that anyone can afford...old baseball scrapbooks. Any given day there are numerous examples on eBay, many B-I-N for very reasonable prices. I now have a vast collection of them, all obtained over the past few years. They really help capture the era. This one covers 1936 to 1939, and is focused on the Yankees, and their 4 game sweep World Series of 1939. Whoever put it together did a beautiful job doing so, and I am mighty happy to have it. It is loaded with info and photos. With my high-value cards now in the safe deposit box, I thought with this Joe DiMaggio thread this would be appropriate.

I had an interesting conversation with Billy Martin when I had him sign this photo in 1982 at the BB Card Show in Atlantic City.

Ted, between your knowledge of cards and stories meeting former players, I really think you should write a book! I know that I would buy a copy :D

Hey James

Happy New Year to you and your Dad....I look forward to seeing both of you again at the March Philly Show in Valley Forge.

OK....I was set up at that Show (close to where Billy was signing). Billy had the longest line of people to get to see him and get his autograph. Billy did
not look like he was in a good mood. He seldom looked up at the people when he signed for them.

I waited till the end of his signing session, and gave this photo to sign. When he saw the photo, he looked up at me and asked me where I got it from ?
I don't recall where I said I got it. But, I instantly said to him...."your performance in the 1953 World Series was one of the best, ever". He appreciated
my comment, and we reminisced a little regarding the 1953 season.

James....check-out the 1953 W.S.....Billy batted .500 (12 Hits for 24 AB's in a 6-game W.S.).
He single-handedly beat the Dodgers with 8 RBI's, .958 SLG, and spectacular fielding.

Fantastic scrapbook and great pictures and stories James. As prices for cards seem to continue going through the roof, newspaper items like these may begin to take over as one of the areas vintage and pre-war "collectors" can still get into without mortgaging the farm. Great stuff, and shows a lot of love and care by whoever put that together.

I'm sure he loved the comment about how well he played in 1953. Always feel that Billy got the short end of the stick, in an effort to curb Mantle's partying ways that it. Shame he passed so young as well, and under such tragic circumstances. An incredible baseball mind.

And Looking forward to the Valley Forge show. Am definitely trying to get down there, circumstances permitting of course. Looking forward to talking Baseball again, in person!
