Crystal ball for 2022
Gaze into your crystal ball and tell what you will predict will happen for cards and card collecting in 2022.
Some interesting topics for me: Cards values go up or pull back? Grading companies- changes? NFTs - big thing or no big deal? MLB lockout in 2022 Love hearing what net54 members think! |
My prediction
Everything I said was overpriced and I wouldn’t ever buy will go crazy. Everything I already have will stagnate. This has been a remarkably consistent pattern for years now…..
|
Both - high grade and HOFers stay strong. Mid/low grade settle down.
Grading Companies - begin slabbing alterations as qualifiers. They also begin to feel the reality of a cooling market once backlogged items are cleared. NFT's - evolve into fungibles Lockout - MLB gets dealt an irreversible blow to their sport already falling and will lose yet another segment of it's fan population. Sounds negative. Wish it were not, so everyone else can shoot me down with positivity. |
I suspect more of what we've seen the last 6-8 months. Top shelf special stuff continues to inch up in price. More droppage in crazy modern stuff and maybe second tier pre-war.
IBM and Visa and Babe Ruth continue to go up. Crazy new tech stocks and Jasson Dominguez and Tua cracked ice refractor cards go down. Less speculating and gambling and more of a move to safe secure iconic names. |
Will Major Auction Houses Continue to Have Record Higher Numbers ???
Does the OMNICRON/DELTA Shutter Shows??? What will happen to PWCC will they be bought out??? WILL CARD DOCTORS CONTINUE TO WIN? |

Karnak says: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...rounds%204.jpg A collector finds an unopened box of Danish Go Rounds from 1972, opens one of the pastries, and the mix of stale sugar and chemicals kills thousands https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...20Safaro_1.jpg PWCC commissions a new theme song for its auction site. https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...re-pawn-15.jpg Cards get their own reality tv show...and it isn't the one we hoped for. The National board announces a different city in the rotation: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...oit%202022.jpg and someone still complains that the rooms are too expensive. |

But very Entertaining Potentially Spot On :D |
Cards values go up or pull back? The cards pricing will continue to be volatile literally auction to auction. The prices on Key Cards, Key Players, and HOFers will continue to be strong. One of a kind and more rare cards are going to fluctuate as some will jump dramatically as 2 bidders get into a bidding war for that card. So expect many cards at prices that will surprise us
Grading companies- changes? Not expecting many changes except hopefully as the backlogs start getting cleaned up then new lower price tiers for grading will be introduced but we will never have the truly "cheaper" bulk options. NFTs - big thing or no big deal? It will become a big thing over time to the new collectors and younger generations but it will be multiple years. MLB lockout in 2022. All about the money and the impact all depends on how much time is lost in games played, shortened season etc. But as we see a lot of money was spent prior to the lock out there is money. Billionaires vs Millionaires. Hard to have sympathy for either group. The Overall Baseball Collection Business will continue to expand. I see Cards staying strong but the biggest growth opportunities in Post Cards and memorbelia |

Though I would take Detroit over Cleveland, Atlantic City or Baltimore any day...still hoping for a decent show in LV or SoCal |
Baltimore was a great show and venue. I mean, except for that guy getting shot at the Hilton the day I got there. But way better than AC.

Hoping for, not predicting.... INDICTMENTS.

hmmm
Cards values go up or pull back?
The cream will continue to rise to the top - a greater shift to premiums for high eye appeal for the grade cards. Everything but the cream will pull back a bit, but not a lot. Grading companies- changes? PSA excitedly reintroduces their value tier with 100 card minimum at $50 per card! SGC continues to think about reintroducing a set registry but likely will not make a decision till at least 2023 An unknown suitor swoops in and buys Beckett - introduces a set registry inclusive of all 3 major grading companies and starts to gain market share NFTs - big thing or no big deal? Not a clue! MLB lockout in 2022 For a lot of reasons I sure hope not |
All card prices will increase dramatically.
Alterations will become WAY more accepted. The big 5 grading companies will make money hand over fist. Not a damn thing will happen to anybody for all the shady(now accepted) stuff that had been going on in the hobby for decades. |

My Latest Blog on This
My latest monthly blog, entitled, "When Will the Hobby Crash?" addresses what I believe the future holds. It can be found at www.markearzoumanian.com. Then click on the "Love of the Hobby" section. My opinion, worth two cents only, is that prices for vintage sports cards, especially those slabbed in higher grades, will continue to rise. Incredible sums of money continue to float out there, looking for a home. Peace.
