Do you prefer cabinet photos or press photos?

*Snapshots ;)

Cabinets for me, by a wide margin.

My Top 3 are
Cabinet Photos Cabinet Photos and then Cabinet Photos |
....its more about the subject and the photo to me.
I'm not going to find DiMaggio, Mantle, Aaron or Mays on a cabinet photo. |
I agree with this...I like most type 1 photos that have historical significance. If the same player image existed in a cabinet, CDV and press photo (which would be extremely rare) I would want the cabinet photo first. Not sure when the press started taking photos, but it is likely the older cabinet and CDV predate traditional photos taken for media purposes. I also love real photo postcard images. Great topic.

Press, maybe RPPCs, snapshots ….. Cabinets don’t coincide with my collecting interests.

Press photography as we really know it began in the early 1900's, but in reality, the genesis would be 1906-1908 as that is when most newspapers started using photo services or employing their own photographers to compete with bigger papers that had gone to photography. Most early photographs in newspaper archives up to this point were only used for engravings so it had as much to do with newspaper technology allowing for photographs to be printed than it did the photography itself being available. You see snapshots and such right around the turn of the century, but rarely before that as the gelatin used for the photographs would break unless it was glued to a cabinet mount to make it sturdy.

Bump, for increased sample size.

Press photos here. I like matching them with cards and tickets. But at the end of the day, eye appeal rules all.

However, for me I am not experienced enough with the photos and the pricing. I have seen photo's that look the same, from the same year, even only Type 1's but they go for dramatically huge price differences. I have a lot to learn before I take the plunge |
