Strange eBay listing with incredible cards

Check this out: https://www.ebay.com/sch/spalding_fa...p2047675.l2562

It's an eBay seller who appears to have an incredible inventory of graded cards up for sale. If you click on the individual cards, the description references a stock liquidation from someone who has closed a pawnshop business. They say they are soliciting offers on the cards.

But if you click on the seller's feedback, it's all nuts, bolts, screws, etc. as their name would suggest. The card listings say they ship from New Orleans, but the seller is based in the UK.

And a bunch of the card photos have the Probstein watermark. Any idea what might be going on here? Any chance these are legit listings?

48550 pos, 55 neutral and 34 neg in the past 12 months. That much eBay activity is a business.

A bunch have the 4SC watermark as well. It all seems too fishy to me. Some pics, some scans - some cropped, some not. Different camera angles, etc. I’ll be surprised if all these don’t get taken down before the auctions end.

Isn't it also strange that literally every item has exactly 1 bid currently

luciobar1980 11-11-2021 04:01 PM

Could you link to the actual listing?

This seller has a bunch of different listings.

edit: nevermind, I see what you mean

Yeah it looks like maybe this person's account was hacked? Every card is listed at $3,000. haha.

Scam

This is a scam. The same cards were put up late last week under the seller name “apronman2011”. Same story about the pawn shop liquidation. I was suspicious, after placing a bid on one of them, and reported it to eBay. Within an hour, all of the auctions were ended. I was actually notified that I won an SGC 5 Cobb red portrait for $500ish, but then later the sale was cancelled.

I’m certain the same thing will happen with all of these.

Also using pictures with probstein123 even though it’s not from him.

I'm impressed with the inventory. One stop shopping for your bulldozer and vintage card needs.

This.

If you Google the company, they are located in the UK. If you look at any of their current items, the item location shows New Orleans. But if you click on one of their past auctions, the item location shows UK.

Highest price completed sale is a lock nut.

He is selling a few Tiger RC numbered to 900. . Including...one that is 588/900. is the same card, my scan etc that I sold a couple months ago.

And that buyer is not in LA or the UK...

Peter_Spaeth 11-11-2021 07:18 PM

It seems their hope is to get a few people to make them offers and pay before ebay figures it out and ends the auctions. I guess they think they've figured out a way they can get the money out of ebay paypal reach.

It does look like a possible hack given the Louisiana listing address and UK location for the account. But what's puzzling is that if the listings are meant to swindle why post a 10 day auction? Why needlessly delay the resolution of the auction and risk being discovered? You would think they would list low Buy it Now prices to grab what they can while they can. Also, no reviews that I've seen reference cards. Lastly, these cards are regularly being offered for thousands and yet the completed sales on this account are invariably under $10. Strange to peddle in cheap items then suddenly go super high end. It might be legit though it looks super iffy.

My guess is that someone has hacked a legitimate seller's account and posted all of these listings. BINs wouldn't make sense, they don't want the sales to happen on Ebay, or the money would not go to the hackers. They are hoping that people read the text in the listing and click on their link which I suppose will end in them asking for the money to be sent to another place, outside of Ebay / Paypal. Again, just my guess at what's happening.

sadly none of this is surprising

and sadly not the last time this will happen

Good sleuthing, chadeast:
