How Often?
We all know what it is like selling a beloved card, whether it is the Babe, Lou, Tyrus or a common that has some personal connection and the severe angst that brings. There is a feeling of emptiness that is hard to get over.
But I wonder how many people at a later date repurchased that same card? I know I have. Several years ago I sold a nice T206 bat on Cobby and felt I had lost a family member. Fortunately, I was able later to pick up a replacement at the Nat'l at a reasonable level. Now I fear it would be hard for me to replicate, given the explosion of T206 Cobb prices. Any similar stories? I know Aaron S. has made a career out of this. |
I sold my green cobby maybe 3 years ago for what I thought was a pretty crazy price...I had owned it for maybe 17 years prior to that.
I suffered from withdrawl symptoms and eventually repurchased one...albeit a lesser example. |
How often? Very often... :) (and there are a lot more)

Traded a T227 Cobb to N54 member for a T206 Cobb. Fair deal and all but that card will eventually call back to me for sure!

I sold all 4 T206 Cobb poses in PSA6 about 13yrs ago for what (at the time) I thought was a good price. I didn't get sellers remorse until around 3-4 yrs later and started looking to pick them back up, sadly I just couldn't get over the hurdle of new prices and with prices what they are today I'll never get them back in that grade. I can't bring myself to pick up a lower grade knowing at one time I had them all in a 6 :(

The one that leaps out at me is the Mayo Hugh Duffy. I really liked that card, found one at a very reasonable price, and held it for a long time. Then someone started making offers on it, so I set a price and they paid it. I regretted the sale for years until I was able to buy a replacement several years later.
The other one is a rare Cuban tobacco card from a brand called Turquino. There was one known example of Dempsey and one of Tunney. A big Dempsey collector approached me to buy my Tunney and made a ridiculous offer so I sold it. He quit a year later and I got it back for a lot less. :D |

When I sell a card it's for the reasoning of supporting my family ~
with that sed... any Matty that I needed to sell is missed & I probably won't get him back. Only being able to be his conservator fir a time will always be cherished ~ This is the only one that really looms in this Category fir me ~ |
Hi
I have done it several times I recently re bought in last 6 months a Felix Mendelssohn Ruth and an e121 Ruth (throwing pose) At the times I had to sell/ trade to get my Rookie Ruth and another card that I wanted more(do not recall which). Sadly it took time for me to find a replacement for each of those 2 cards. In both cases I had to pay more for them since the market went up. |

I haven't had the experience of selling a card like that; however, there are a number I kick myself for not digging deeper for when I had the chance. Cards that I thought were overpriced at the time have since sold for several multiples, and/or just don't come up that often.

Since I am virtually "out of the ball game" where collecting vintage is concerned, and MUST be very careful what I spend, I have had some opportunities slip through my fingers that, frankly, I don't like to think about. I urge you to keep a paper/ cardstock list of cards you've thought long and hard over that you still want. When one becomes available for a price that won't give you buyer's remorse----get it! Seriously, there's one I missed this year that chances are will never return. Just as McHale's Navy nemesis, Capt. Wallace B. Binghampton, would say, "I COULD JUST SCREAM!" If memory serves, one time 'ol Leadbottom did scream. But we're gettin' close to home, aren't we, bro. Hang in there. I wish for you a couple good surprises by year's end.:) --- Brian Powell |
Yup.
Haha! Yes, I've been there. I have bought and then traded and then re-traded to get back the exact same postcard...😊
