Five for the Cardinals and Molina who has a bunch of them was not one of the five

Quite a year Marcus Simien had! A Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger award.
2 other Jays in Vladimir Guerrero Jr and Teoscar Hernandez also won Silver Slugger awards. :)

The gold glove awards became irrelevant in 1999 when palmeiro got it for playing 28 games at first base.

I think it's actually shifted the opposite way, now. It actually values defense, or at least attempts to, by pointing to a lot of the newer defensive metrics. Though I do agree that by the late 90's/early 2000's it became a popularity award. Derek Jeter, certainly did not deserve to win five of them (or is it six, I can't remember)

I agree that GG are beginning to recognize defensive excellence.

As for silver sluggers, I want to point out that Joey Votto has not won yet even though he ws the best hitting first baseman 5 times. He didn't even win during his MVP season, or when he narrowly lost to Stanton. This Reds fan is not bitter!
