I think it's actually shifted the opposite way, now. It actually values defense, or at least attempts to, by pointing to a lot of the newer defensive metrics. Though I do agree that by the late 90's/early 2000's it became a popularity award. Derek Jeter, certainly did not deserve to win five of them (or is it six, I can't remember)
