Jewish baseball history tonight

When Max Fried faces Alex Bregman tonight, it will be the 1st time in World Series history two Jews face each other. Joc Pederson makes it 3 Jews in one WS game.

Very interesting. Hard to believe that's never happened before with all the great Jewish baseball players that have been in the World Series: Sandy Koufax, Hank Greenberg, Lou Boudreau to name a few. I guess Rod Carew, Shawn Green and Brad Ausmus never made it.

Despite popular belief and the Adam Sandler song Rod Carew never actually converted

It’s hard to believe Sandy Koufax or Ken Holtzman never faced one. Holtzman and Mike Epstein were teammates on the 1972 A’s.

Thanks for pointing that out re: Rod Carew. Adam Sandler played me for a fool.

This myth is in part because
His wife was Jewish. Their kids was raised Jewish
And he observed many of the Jewish customs.

Would just like to point out that Carew was just slightly before my time but in looking at his stats I know it would be hard to say a HOFer is underrated but he is underrated.

If Carew were playing today, he'd take one look at the shift with a big smile on his face and promptly slap the ball to left. He, Ichiro, and Gwynn looked as though they were actually able to aim the ball exactly where they wanted it to go.

I thought Steve Yeager was Jewish and Holtzman must have faced him.

He converted after his career was over.

Just to have a card in this post, here's the '75 Topps with Yeager catching and Holtzman at the plate.

jewish baseball

reminds me the Dodgers in WS in the 60s ...Koufax refuses to pitch to observe jewish holiday....Drysdale pitches and gets shelled...after game they ask Dodger mgr Alston about Drysdale performance ..he says - I wish Drysdale was jewish ! LOL

Exhibitman 10-28-2021 07:05 AM

Actually, it was Drysdale who said to Alston "I bet you wish I was Jewish too."
