pre 1900s baseball team photo, looking for information
 

I found this photo in a stack of family documents. Of all the men I know one of them is my Great Great Grandfather, Leonard Henry Staubly. He was an army man in the 1890s and was stationed out Fort Mckinney in the town of Buffalo, Wyoming. I recently contacted the town historian about baseball records from the 1890s and she provided me with one, but no team photos to go off of. But Apart from that I am unsure of anything about the photo. There has been some theories put forward that the photo is actually from Buffalo county New York, and I know that my relative in the photo did live in that county, or nearby, in the same decade he was stationed in Wyoming.

Nice photo. Protoball lists an 1888 baseball game between a team from Big Horn and Fort McKinney. It also references a box score. A good starting point.
Personally I think very likely it is Buffalo Wyoming, based upon Protoball report, his army service, service cap on the mascot etc. I think your photo also dates from that time period.

Highly unlikely it is from Buffalo, NY since the words 'Champions of Wyoming' are written on the bottom.

There is a Wyoming County in New York just east of Buffalo, and there is a town named Wyoming in that county.

Great photo - looks like they have McKinney on their jerseys.

Agreeing with bgar on the military look of the mascot -- plus the western style hat on the guy at center rear.
We'd expect the caption to read "Wyoming County," not just "Wyoming," if it wasn't referring to the state.

The mascot is wearing kepi which was worn into at least the late 1870's. His jacket it a double breasted tunic, but does not have brass military buttons. Goodyear made 4 hole military buttons during the Civil War though I do not know if they continued to make them postwar.

It is too bad you cannot read the writing on the shirt pockets. It is clearest on the man in the second row to the right of the mascot. I played around with the image in Ulead, but the resolution is too low. The man leaning on the bat on the right looks like he has the YMCA logo on his shirt pocket, but that may also just be the angle as there does appear to be writing on the pocket.
