Robert Edwards September Encore - Thoughts? Wins?
Any thoughts on the auction last night?
Any lots you can’t wait to see in hand? |
Won a couple of Turkey Red commons, a PSA Bill Bergen & SGC Ed Konetchy
Here's the Ed Konetchy, which I'll probably bust out as the slab is scuffed & scratched https://createauctioncdn.azureedge.n...8_1_204912.jpg |
I picked up t206 Tinker and Chance but fell asleep right before being outbid on Evers. Tinker to Chance just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
|
I'd like to thank the other bidders for saving me money!
Went to sleep leading with some room left on my max bid for the Ripken autographed ball, and woke up to see I was outbid. Getting up at 4:30am for work, Sunday night's are killers. |

Tinker bat on shoulder? (I was in the early bidding for them. Beautiful cards if they’re now yours!) |
I scooped up a few lower grade T206's that I needed, and I thought the prices were fine. I was disappointed to miss out on the Brashear Cycle, but you can't win'em all.
|
Hi
I am looking forward to everyone's wins. I was fortunate that I did not see anything I needed for my collection. So I kept my vow 1 Auction in not to buy anything and regroup the funds. Feel like an addict going thru withdrawal and trying to make it thru 1 Auction at a time. But Boy oh Boy Memory Lanes is coming up with alot of Wow Cards |

I picked up these two for my T205 set.
|
Managed to snag the Geo. Miller Maranville, the '33 Goudey Pennock and the T206 Kleinow, Boston.
I thought prices were strong but the material was weak for REA. There was only one low grade T206Cobb, red bkg. and no major Ruths. It shows again, at least to me, that collectors are sitting tight. If PWCC has a huge rollout of pre-war when their platform is launched, then watch out for increased hostilities among the AHs. |

Just one for me. Overall I think this was possibly the weakest REA auction for the year, especially from a pre-war point of view.
|
I struck out on a few smaller things. There was nothing I needed for my collection. As for the auction, we need to remember they do one every month now. I don't think any company can have 12 super great auctions a year.
just my half cent... . |

I won the Tom Lovett (Boston) Mayo Cut Plug. I've bene looking for an affordable Mayo for awhile to display along with an unopened Mayo pack and pouch from about 1900-1910. |
If low-to-mid grade T205 & T206 are your thing, there were plenty of nice cards to add.
I won 2 lots. My first t205: https://i.imgur.com/fSiTMD6.jpeg And a 57 Kaline (Sorry if it doesn't belong in the pre-war section): https://i.imgur.com/5HeVqAH.jpeg I missed out on a 57 Ted Williams (mostly because this Kaline went for more than I thought it would), and sharp 60 Musial SGC 7. |

I got an E93 I needed and this Hammon postcard.

I picked up 3 T205 HoFers - Baker, Bender and Walsh, along with the Wallace 1 line of stats variation.

I also picked up a Griffith portrait and a Wallace portrait in PSA 1, and both copies look really nice, just a few small specks of paper loss/back stain, but good eye appeal overall. I'm going to snap out all 5 of the cards I won and put them in my binder, but the prices felt right given what I've seen recently even for raw cards. |
I paid this morning with Zelle and already got a UPS tracking number. Always top notch.

Very underwhelming
|
I was wondering if it was called an encore auction because it wasn’t a main auction but just some sort of follow up - maybe things that didn’t hit a prior reserve or something. No idea but yeah it seemed underwhelming.
|
Its their monthly auction, not to be confused with the quarterly blockbuster auctions.
|
Well, both of you outbid me, then.
I'm cool with my '41 Mel Ott, though. Quote:

T205 "Joe" Bates, "...one of the best batters in the league." Baseball reference has contemporary comps like Doug Glanville and Jose Cardenal.

The 41 Ott was amazing. Made me regret not doing Play Ball. Yet still thought about it. Congrats.

Glanville may have gotten some credit for his defensive stats. I agree that it's not easy to compare eras. They have Mike Mitchell as his contemporary comparison.
I was kind of hoping to show that Bates was more than a "common", but I don't think I accomplished that here. Most of the players that made it into T205 and T206 were pretty good. |

Rob, nice job getting the Bates Broadleaf, I dropped out pretty early, but thought it was a great looking card.
I ended up snagging a few that helped fill some holes in my t205 and t206 set. Attachment 479645Attachment 479646 Attachment 479647Attachment 479648 Attachment 479649Attachment 479650 |

Some nice wins this month from REA for our Forum Group
Great Pickups |

These monthly smaller auctions are a great source for collectors to fill in sets with single cards that would otherwise be accumulated into big lots in the main auctions. I appreciate the format.
The red Cobb was a 1 and still went over $2500. |

The high-profile auctions full of $1000+ cards are great to look at. But barring some key card that I NEED to have, they just aren't realistic for me to consider at this point in my collecting. The auction Sunday night had at least 50 cards, of HOF players, in mainstream sets, that were in a realistic price range for more low-mid budget collectors. For me it was just a matter of which ones to target. While I understand how it could seem underwhelming to some, I loved it. |
I always look forward to see what REA has in any auction. I did not win a single lot for the first time in years with them. There were a lot of cards (mainly t206s) that I bid on in this auction but nothing was a MUST have for my collecting needs. This was probably the most (numberswise) cards that I have bid on but again nothing was so impressive that I just had to have it. Hopefully next month will be more impressive. I know one card already consigned that I definitely will be bidding on.

Got a few of the Boston Store cards including a pretty rough looking Ping Bodie to go with my Standard Biscuit Ping, and a neat Propaganda Montiel Ted. I really like those 1940s Cuban sets. Got outbid on the Dihigo as well as the E220 Sisler and the T222 Marquard. Whoever got that Marquard is lucky. Cool looking card.

This filled a gap in my T206 HOF collection. I'm generally pleased with REA offerings.

It is also smart marketing not to cede that market segment to other AHs if you can use your resources and make a buck or two instead. When I go to a show or take a table at one I will look for stuff I want, stuff I need, and stuff I can profit from, and I don't turn down the last just because the items aren't in my wheelhouse. I bought a pile of wrestling cards at a paper fair recently. I don't know squat about 1920s wrestlers but I know I can make a profit on them if I get them at the right price, which I did, and I am. Same idea.

I don't know . . . . if you are the recognized gold standard for selling quality steak in [INSERT NAME OF BIG CITY], is it good for your brand to start selling lesser cuts of steak at a reduced cost just to satisfy a market? I am sure people smarter than me study this at business school. If people still go to business school these days.

I think the big risk is people "forgetting" about you because you aren't front and center all the time. If you only run quarterly auctions, for instance, I think you run the risk of people just kind of tuning out and not remembering when to check back in. If you run 4 big auctions a year quarterly, and you run smaller monthly auctions in between, people are always coming back to your site, they are always checking to see what is running/open, and I think it makes it easier to pump up and market your bigger events.

Upgraded my SC350F25 card for my back set display! Graded Good+ but it looks much nicer, here is hoping nobody messed with the scanner settings :-)
It will look nice "Backside Out" in my display case.... reasonably priced at just over $100. Cliff Attachment 479921 |

latest REA
I went 1 for 3 in my bid upon items, so I feel like Rod Carew:)
My win was a 55 Topps Warren Spahn SGC 5 If any of you bid a million times to beat me for the E98 Dahlen SGC 20 and are interested in dangling it for sale or trade, I'd listen... Trent King |
