Nice!!! I was looking at those 1984 sterling silver "cards," and the following things occurred to me:
1. Topps did pretty damn well identifying superstars, as 8/10 are in the HOF -- the only two not in are Rose and Garvey. 2. How in the heck did it happen that 4/10 were Phillies??? 3. Those are pretty darn neat. kevin |
Man. Topps was pretty convinced kids would buy just about anything in the '80s!

While it won't affect me, as I do not buy or collect modern, Topps will be missed. To me, it's kind of like when Vin Scully retired. He was there all my life, and years before I was born. Same thing with Topps. Sad to me...

Thanks for the post, Al. I'm really enjoying your oddball Topps collection. Especially since it comes from a period, the 1980's-1990's, where it would be easy to assume that Topps wasn't doing much. This is an excellent argument for the idea that Topps was really trying to come up with some variants that would simply be fun. Personally, I find all of these oddball items lots more fun than the present lineup of Chrome, Refractors, blue/red/pink/camo etc. that Topps is producing. I know that we have some other options, but nothing like this.

The hats are interesting- I've got a t-shirt somewhere (wish it still fit) from the 2010 Topps "Cards Your Mom Threw Out" promotion, it has a '52 Mantle on it. Got it from a Topps employee.

We can go back in time a bit further. Here's some earlier Topps nostalgia. From 1951, 1952, and 1953.

Have only seen those 4 Chris, but Dave Hornish might be aware if there were others

Some Topps store displays from the early days of Topps attempt to enter the world of baseball cards. The first photo is the 1952 Topps display and the second is the 1953 Topps wax boxes on a store shelf. Got any nickels? These have been posted before, but they are iconic.

I’ve have seen the 52 store display before, but it never gets old. And for whatever reason, I just noticed the mannequin hand holding the single wax pack. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I wonder what happened to those partial uncut sheets?!

Something from Topps first year of baseball cards.

Those look familiar :).
1951 is an afterthought to most Topps collectors, but all 5 of those sets are fun There is a board game included in the Red Back pack, which includes a full set of panels. It also includes at least 4 Connie Mack or Current All Stars. Unfortunately there are also small rubber bands on both stacks of cards at the perforations. But they are full against the All Star cards |
I have dozens of Topps display boxes and wrappers from a 50 year run (1951-2000) except 1952, 1954 and 1955...I filled in those years with Bowman display boxes...but some of the non-traditional display boxes are my favorites...here is one of them...the 1973 Topps Candy Lids shown with a couple of the candy tubshttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1eac4e6aed.jpg
