It's DIAMOND STARS time.....so show us your pretty Art Deco gems

http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...tarwrapper.jpg

The Art Deco style of the 1934 - 1936 DIAMOND STARS cards always fascinated me. I favor the horizontal images in this set. I broke up my 108-card set some years ago,
and if I recall correctly there are only 8 horizontal cards in it. These cards are Frisch, Gehringer, Grace, Lopez, Ostermueller, Riggs, Trosky, Urbanski.
The first 96 cards are relatively easy to find. The 12 high #s (#97 - 108) are very difficult to find. These 12 cards are repeated from earlier subjects.
DIAMOND STARS cards are seldom seen on Net54. So, how about displaying some of your's.

I was really struck by this set when going through the latest REA catalogue, and the Lloyd Waner in particular. I think it's the next set I'm going to take on after I finish my current project.

Always good for a Diamond Stars card or two (or a few). Definitely one of the first sets I got into, due to its great and interesting artwork.

I just love the artwork. I need 19 cards to complete the set.
Does anyone know how many different style wrappers were produced?

robw1959 08-27-2021 11:30 PM

I have a complete set of these - that is a complete set of 96 cards. I don't really see the need to go after the twelve scarcer high numbered duplicates since they are only duplicates, except for the higher numbers on back.

I always felt the same way...but to be fair, they also have 1935 stats on the back instead of 1934 (and in some cases 1933). I always wished they instead issued the cards seen on that 12 card proof sheet (as seen in the first scan, and what I believe is the Pete Fox original artwork seen on that sheet)...those cards really have a colorful geometric background.

Brian (also shown is the original artwork and matching card for Julius Solters...by the way, none of these are mine)

The Fox artwork is the most unusual in that National Chicle converted a batting image into a fielding one. Source photo had been used in a more traditional way by Goudey two years earlier and again in 1936 as Wide Pen Premium.

I will likely take the same approach if I ever chase the set.

Love the Diamond Stars. Great set for collecting the '34-35 Tigers. It's a good, easy and relatively inexpensive pre-war set to collect. And despite what most of the price guides say, it's the first 23 cards from 1934 that are tough - at least to find in good condition.

The cards themselves always suggest to me a sort of DC comic look from the 1930's. Seems like you could put together some sort of story based on some of the oddities in the backgrounds.

Something obviously has blown up behind Jimmy Dykes but he doesn't seem concerned..

Turn around Louis! What's wrong with you? You're about to be killed!

Great card, but I always wondered how the grader at SGC determined it was the #103 Dickey instead of the lower number.

Super job on the Stan Hack card! I always liked that he is in two of my favorite sets from different eras: Diamond Stars and Wilson Franks.

Some horizontals (it took me about ten tries to figure out how to arrange them on the scanner).

There's definitely a few cards from this set that I need to pick up. After a summer of purchasing, I'm taking a small break from anything big, but I really love Dickey, Foxx, Ott, Grove and Gerhinger from this set!

molenick 08-28-2021 12:16 PM

I just realized that Hack's write-up is odd considering from 1934-36 his games played at 3b/1b were 109/0, 111/7, and 140/11. I guess on the few occasions he did play first he impressed people with his one hand catches.

ngrow9 08-28-2021 12:26 PM

So upon further reflection, this thread motivated me to pull the trigger on starting a collector grade set. Just picked up my first card off eBay.

Very nice Grove. Looks better than some higher grade examples whose images are not as sharp or as well-centered.

George "Twinkletoes" Selkirk

In 1935, George took over Babe Ruth's right-field spot at Yankee Stadium. He had a very respectable 9-year career with the Yankees.
Career BA = .290 with 108 HR's and drove in 576 Runs.

Carl Hubbell was an amazing southpaw pitcher, who pitched a very effective screwball. He is best remembered for his performance
in the 1934 All-Star Game when he struck out 5 future Hall of Famers: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, Joe Cronin
in succession.
Carl's record of 24 consecutive Wins has yet to be broken.

Another great aspect of some Diamond Stars cards is that they tell a story, in my opinion more so than any other vintage card set featuring artwork.

Here is a great story card depicting Hal Trosky at bat with all the appropriate baseball action behind him.

We had a thread the other day about how to pronounce Goudey. So what's the most widely accepted pronunciation of National Chicle? CHICK-el?

Awesome!

I only need Mr Tony Lazzeri to finish the base set. That's one for each number.
I have all the high numbers.
I've also been working on the full Master set of each version of each card. I'm 80% of the way but that effort has slowed considerably.

Love this set

I have had a BLAST putting this set together (Still looking for #99 Pie Traynor if anyone has one.....). From the artwork to the aesthetic, it is easily one of my favorites!

I love the Diamond Stars as well and have 83 of the 108 cards = 76% complete set. I only have one high number the last card in the set #108 Walter Berger.

Let's continue displaying these colorful pieces of art, and perhaps we may complete this basic set.

jason.1969 09-01-2021 12:50 PM

Love the pics I’m seeing. In my mind this is the second best set of the 1930s behind only 1933 Goudey. Lack of Ruth/Gehrig doesn’t bother me at all.

Something that might be of interest to casual collectors who haven’t studied the set in detail. Along with the stat/bio updates on the backs of cards repeated from one year to another, there are six players who have “front” variations.

The first five simply reflect players who changed teams from one year to the next. The final one is not a true variation since the card numbers differ: low number 1935 Berger #25 vs high number 1936 Berger #108. Here “Braves” is removed to reflect the renaming of the team as the Bees.
