70s Hall of Very Good

Just for the hell of it. My 70s one step short of the HOF (so far) cards.
|
With a name like Charlie Spikes and sporting those old school mutton chops he should get a pass to the Hall just on style points.
|
If it were up to me, Whitaker, Evans, Murphy and Parker would be there already.
With out the players strike of '81, Murphy would already be there. When he came up for consideration 400 HR was still the line to cross for more-or-less automatic admission. He finished his career with 398. He certainly would have hit a couple over that month or so of missed games in '81. So, he'd be in there without a doubt. Sad. |
I think the 75 Keith Hernandez and Fred Lynn, and maybe a 1970 Vida Blue could find a place in there too.
|
It is a shame that Garvey, Parker, Murphy and Hernandez aren't in while lesser players like Blyleven, Simmons, Sutter and Morris are.

George Foster
Bob, I am digging the card of George Foster. He was definitely one of my favorite Reds growing up.
|
Seeing that Reggie Smith card reminds me. In 1981 Reggie Jackson Goose Gossage and Dave Winfield (all HOF) lost to a Dodgers team that included Fernando Valenzuela, Steve Garvey & Reggie Smith.
Not quite the 1970s, but many from that Dodgers team would qualify for the Hall of Very Good. |

Later when he was with the A's I saw him hit one that was described in the paper the next day as having cleared the ballpark, paid its toll on the Mass Pike and headed west. Not really a great hitter when all was said and done but man the power. I found the Fenway HR on YouTube. Probably the worst outing Clemens had that year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huDWalVTzo8 |
There's nothing better than watching an outfielder not even react to a blast, because he instantly knows the ball is waaaaay gone.

Tommy Lasorda on Dave Kingman (UNCENSORED) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKNnXZqQom8 |
I just listened to the Lasorda sound bite and laughed all the way through it...classic!
