Player Set Collections - Report your Progress
Figured it would be fun to see what people have completed and/or are working on as inspiration to plug away (trying to figure out next player PC myself).
Last month I finished my Koufax Topps basic run which took about a year and a half for me to complete and find ones that appeal to me. I’m still plugging away and have 4 leaders cards remaining for all his mainstream Topps cards. Pretty happy with the turn out and will tweak as we move forward but for the most part completed. Just rescanned all of them as well. Please post up what you have, love seeing the player runs and progress. https://i.ibb.co/D9L68HH/C7-BB880-E-...D5-B138-A6.jpg https://i.ibb.co/SrVw83c/2-DBCC311-D...B61-E936-B.jpg |

My player sets: Jim Palmer: 27/27; Completed in January, 2007 Brooks Robinson: 22/24 (almost there!); Started in December, 2014 Frank Robinson: 12/19; Started in December, 2014 Carl Furillo: 7/12; Started in August, 2015 Boog Powell: 10/16; Started in February, 2015 Al Kaline: 6/22; Just started It's slow going for me. I've gone 6 months without buying a card, and I've bought 6 in a week. No rush. It's been a nice exercise in patience for me, waiting for centered cards that appeal to me in the same way those Koufax cards appeal to you. |
That’s awesome Rugby!!!! That’s a great list, post up some pics if you get a chance!!!

Mantle Set Collector here.
While I've slowed down, I've made substantial progress toward my goal of whats considered to be Mantle's Basic Set. I've gone a little beyond the basic, as well, mostly because I love how certain cards, such as his 54 Red Heart and 52 Berk Ross, look. I'm going to hit the proverbial wall, once I acquire the 52 Bowman and 53 Topps. I don't think I'll be able to touch the 51 Bowman or the 52 Topps for a long time. I'm dragging my feet when it comes to his 60's cards, mostly because they're readily available. My current progress is outlined below. - 52 Berk Ross - 53 Bowman - 54 Bowman - 54 Red Heart - 55 Bowman - 56 Topps - 57 Topps - 58 Topps - 59 Topps - 60 Topps - 61 Topps - 62 Topps - 66 Topps - 68 Topps I was Thinking of maybe working on Mays once I'm done with the Mick. Or shift my focus to some prewar cards. I've always wanted a Gehrig in my collection, along with a Ruth, Cobb and Mathewson. Collecting's a lifetime journey though, I'll get them all eventually, God Willing! |

I have several player collections as listed in my sig below but the one I cherish most is my Billy Pierce collection. I sent him this pic of what I could fit on the table a few years before he passed away. I've added some items to it in the ensuing years but most of those are display pieces, publications and various photos, mostly Type I's.
Of his career-era cards I lack only his '59 Bazooka SP. I keep bidding on it and maybe someday I'll get lucky. His Shirriff coin from 1962 is also on my wantlist but it hardly ever shows up anywhere for sale/auction and it's an identical, more costly version to the Salada coin so I'm not really chasing it. I have a PM 10 stadium-sold pinback button on my list but I've never seen evidence that one really exists. Here's a link to an old blog post of mine with my Billy Pierce checklist, haphazardly updated over time. https://5toolcollector.blogspot.com/...ly-pierce.html Attachment 468260 |
Love that Pierce collection, that is really cool!!

Roberto Clemente
has been the focus of my collecting interest. You can see all of the graded cards here:
https://www.psacard.com/psasetregist...timeset/243775 I am not trying to get every card in the master set, but do hope to fill in some of the holes - anyone have an extra 1962 Pittsburgh Exhibit Clemente? A whole bunch of 1967-68 bottle caps are in process of being added. My collection extends well beyond the master set - pics for another day. |

I put these together years ago. All lower condition with nice eye appeal. Glad I did it back then and not tried to do it now. The rookie cards are in a different display case.

I finished my Brooks Robinson set recently, and to celebrate the occasion I bought a better scanner (Epson v600). So I'll be doing picture overload to show off some cards. When I decided to complete his run of cards, I didn't have a specific grade range in mind, and I still don't. I just wanted cards that looked nice to me. I kept telling myself to be patient. I've been outbid on hundreds of Brooks cards in the last 6-7 years, but with this era (50s - 70s star cards), there's always another card.
Some stats on my Brooks run: - 1st card purchased: 1964 Topps, 12/29/2014 - Last card: 1966 Topps, 10/3/2021 - Longest time between purchases: 17 months - Shortest time between purchases: 2 days Too many words...Here are some cards! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...427e2ec7_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...386ce5c1_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...24e5512c_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ab29ea54_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6f625b7f_b.jpg |
(Though not officially part of a 'Basic' Brooks set, it's very tough to find in any condition, so I was thrilled when a net54 member offered to sell it to me.)

The value of patience
Incredible collection - almost every single card (excepting '71) looks stunning with beyond exceptional centering for its grade! Great collection. Thanks for sharing.

These are all amazing! The Koufax ones are wonderful, of course. And I am especially impressed with the individual quality of the cards in the Brooks Robinson collection. I've never collected his cards in particular but did have a few from the early 70s when I was collecting then as a kid and always admired the older ones. Good work!
My own current focus is vintage Japanese cards (and Type 1 photos) and I have player collections going of about a dozen players. The furthest along is Shigeo Nagashima, Japan's most popular player. But collecting his cards is a little different. I have about 120 of his rookie cards (all different) and suspect I only have about 2/3 of the know issues and less of all of them out there. But I do have many/most of the hardest to find, so at least that's a start. I will try to scan a few just for fun.... |
Aaron Run!
Some great looking cards being posted. I am currently working on a Hank Aaron run. I have a long way to go.

Mantle

Mantle collector here. Unfortunately, had to tap out as prices rose faster than my income :). Got the basic set done and roughly 90% of the way through the master set, so I’ll call it a win.

I just got all of these scanned, and I sold most of the extras from when I was collecting more than just his basic run of cards. I did keep a couple of non-Basic set items. I finished this set up in 2007 or 2008, and I've upgraded about 10 of them in the last 6 years.
Now, for the cards: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8540b7aa_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fccf4f87_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1a653b72_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1b0cef2f_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...86b3765c_c.jpg |

Just an ugly pile now. I had not been through my Wade Boggs collection in easily 15-20 years. I also have not bought many Boggs cards in that time. I finally dug out the approximately 12-14,000 Boggs cards I have. These piles plus about 30 9 pocket sheets are the what I ended up with.
It is amazing how many cards I have 10-20 of and even crazier how many I have 50-100 copies of. My goal is to get the cards into binders. I am guessing at there being 1500-1600 different Boggs cards.:) |

Since the OP I’ve upgraded a couple |
Brooks Robinson
9 Attachment(s)
Good evening. I saw this thread a few times so thought to share my Brooks Robinson PSA Master Set. This set is registered on PSA as the second best set in quality but it is the only one 100% complete. There are 293 different "items." The set consists of items Brooks appeard on during his playing days (1977-1977) on cards, team cards, stickers, pins, pictures, pin ups, soda caps, photos, stamps, discs, match books, lids, coins, and boxes. Items are made by Topps, Fleer, Bazooka, Rawlings, Coca Cola, Orioles Team items, regional items, etc. The set averages about a PSA 7. Over 130 items are tied or highest graded. Some cost as little as $10 while others are upwards of $10,000 given their rarity or grade. Several of the items are one of a kind. The set is posted with pictures on PSA under Charlie's Brooksie Master Set. Putting this set together was a 2+ year project but in some cases I have had some of the cards since I was a small boy. The PSA Brooks basic set is embedded and it averages a PSA 9 (24 cards). If you have any rare Brooks items, give me a yell at charles.strite@yahoo.com. I have some extra items if interested in trading. I am always looking for Brooks, Jim Palmer and Dave McNally items.
