The National - Star Card Prices
 

I enjoy this gentleman's youtube channel and watched the below episode about the Philly Show:

One commented he mentioned was that at the Philly show, dealers wouldn't move off star card prices.

If you are going to the National, and looking to buy stars, are you willing to go above VCP and book prices? Or will prices be different at the National?

generalizations about shows are silly. plenty of dealers at Philly are happy to negotiate. Maybe not the ones he spoke to, but a blanket statement about a show with hundreds of dealers is kinda goofy.

Good Mid to High End Slabbed Cards Will Not Be Discounted. Over the past 4 months I’ve reached out to sellers on eBay and or Facebook that I have bought from before offering 20% off their asking price offering Cash In Person and here is what I get...a couple responses well one sold for *price...well that was One Sale In March with PWCC all the other sales are 30% less.... their response if it doesn’t sell for my price around that number I’ll send to Pwcc or Goldin.

So this is where I’m at, going to the National No Longer Serves a Purpose for me, I can’t buy. The AH’s specifically these two have the market cornered on every facet. Look On EBay and search vintage cards at auction 85% of those up for auction are on PWCC...this is factual. In Goldin PSA Now Wants a Bite Of the Apple reaping rewards from their point of sale through ownership.

If your goal is off grade beat up cards 50’s-60’s to build your set you will love this show plenty of those, dumpers divers delights. Meaning 3 cards for $3 bucks or 2 for a $1 if that’s your thing you will have a great time. It’s Just not my thing.

Well I set up at Philly with two other Net54 Members who have incredible stuff, slabbed, Tobacco through today, and I can guarantee you they negotiated all weekend. I didn't bring a ton for sale as I am more there to promote the auction, but negotiated on and sold slabbed 1915 Cracker Jacks.

I watched the video and saw Howard and Scott in it.

Hard to believe someone would have turned down $2 million for the Tatis card shown in the video, but I guess they're hoping that it will eventually be worth what one of Trout's cards sold for. Seems like a bit of a risk to me, but to each their own.

REA has all the great cards too and they run a fair and honorable auction. No need to haggle, just put in the bids.

I really enjoyed this, thanks to the poster and to the guy who made it. I also saw the video about his buddy who has been accumulating Trout second-year cards for years on the idea that they would eventually follow his rookie card into the stratosphere. Explained everything I was wondering about the crowds of young people at the Philly show.

I have made good deals at Nationals in the past but not too many the last several times I have gone. Dealers will negotiate but everyone has the internet :) nowadays. There is usually some great stuff, it's just affording it is the issue.

the market is what the market is. I have lost out on many cards because I convinced myself they were overpriced by looking at last sales, or telling myself I would find another. I just bought a few common back raw T-206s on Ebay, probably all VG. I paid roughly $55 each. that is a lot for raw T206 commons. but if those cards were listed here for $35-$40, they'd be sold by the time I opened the thread. The green Cobb that was listed here a few months back for a good price was gone in seconds. These deals are hard to come by, and if you wait around it will take a century to finish a set.

The cornucopia of great deals out there is a myth. I am in the market daily- here on Net54, at auctions, and on Ebay buying all sorts of cards at all sorts of prices, spending a good amount of money in aggregate. I know the market. I know the market better than the guy here who screamed at me not to pay $6600 for an REA red cobb that was a 7 except for a barely noticeable pinhole (the one that got away). Cards are expensive, because a lot of people collect them. it is what it is .

Having done card shows for 45 years, there have been so many highs and lows in the hobby. At one point, I was setting up at 40+ shows in a year; 24 of them were my monthly shows I ran for 20+ years. But I gave up on that route over 15 years ago, and now I set up at the National every year, and that is the only place I set up at annually. I used to do many of the premier shows (like Philly) in the country, but I got older and its just too tough to set up and break down.

I have $0 invested in PSA grading so everything I sell has a built in discount that I can negotiate with the buyer. Everything I sell is raw and its all vintage. My prices range from dollars to over $100,000, and more. Imagine if it was graded? Do my customers grade what they buy from me? Good question -- but does it really matter to me?

I must be doing something right as my last 3 years at just the National (and other interim sales to customers) have been my best 3 years ever.

Yeah, there is probably a high percentage of crap at any large show, but I work very hard every year to prepare a display that is impressive, whether it sells or not. At least, I won't compromise my approach to giving everyone something special to look at.

As graded cards carry a defined premium, I can't see why it still wouldn't be worth your time to "waste" a day or two at this year's National to see what is there and try and make some deals?

The cornucopia of great deals out there is a myth. Spot on they’re not there unless you consider dollar box beat up high number 67’s a deal.

Being filmed, I doubt anyone would make a concrete statement that they would sell at a certain price. These prices are nuts though-yikes!

I often wonder what the ratio is of people who show up at the National to sell their cards...selling them to dealers vs consigners?

I feel the auction houses get pretty much 90% of all the good raw virgin vintage collections these days, it’s been this way for years now.

One thing to remember about the NSCC is for many dealers the cost can be $5-6K for everything from table booth fees to hotel room to food and then to travel.

That's a huge outlay before you take in a penny. I know customers don't think of those factors but I can assure you the more it costs to set up, the harder it is to give anything but dealer to dealer hi level discounts but retail may be, well retail.
