Good morning,

Just picked this guy up. Appears to be all original but wanted to get your guys thoughts as well. Did take it out of frame as I was worried about mold and water damage.

Thanks

Nice one. And, welcome to net54.

I'm guessing a copy put in the frame a long time ago, but would have to have it in hand to know for sure.

What are some of the things you would look for if you had it in hand? Happy to take more photos if needed.

Things that would differentiate upon close inspection only: resolution of the picture (sharpness, clarity), granularity (silver content?), contrast, etc. Looking from different angles and lighting often helps bring these out, but they are hard to capture in photos, which is why experts (not me, I've just seen a lot of photos of all types) will defer an opinion until they can make a direct inspection. Age toning of the white borders and back can be a factor, too, although in this case it seems to have been framed a while ago, so there would be evidence of age regardless. This could very well be a Type I first-generation print, but it looks to me from a distance to be more likely to be a copy that was made for presentation in a museum (Bob Feller's, maybe?) or at an exhibit, based on the large margins and type of frame and caption labeling.

I’m not expert at all, but those margins do seem different than other panoramas I’ve seen.

Welcome!

Thanks everyone for the responses

is the paper like image shown in the 2nd picture the photo?

Just an opinion from a 50 year collector but NOT a photograph expert ... don’t like those large borders as I usually associate those with reprints although this may have been an older reprint as mentioned above.

The image is the photo attached to the matte.

Welcome,

Anytime you have a matted photo there are always questions, is the paper real thin, does it really look like a photo under magnification?

How did you get it? and can the original owner tell you anything about it - many times you see matted pieces that are copies of original photos from libraries or press documents that end up getting framed. Photos are tough to buy - because there could be first generation, 2nd and 3rd and so on - so really do your research!

In person and maybe some large photos are best to figure things out, really hard to tell with what you provided.

Good luck!

Jimmy
