“Diamond cut” card - impact on grading?
2 Attachment(s)
I always learn so much from this forum… and recently, I learned what a Diamond Cut card was - see below.
Wondering what others experience is in submitting cards like this for grading? Any thoughts what grade this might get? Worth submitting to SGC? Thx for the advice Jeff |
What is it because I’m still not getting it myself.
|
If I have it right, diamond cut is when the card itself was printed at an angle, straight cardboard, but angled image (you can see this one more on the back of the Bench)
|
Mmm, I think I see it now. The front right of Bench, the black border line is closer to the edge at the bottom than it is at the top?
It is reversed on the left side. I believe that is what you are referring too. Thanks! |
Some Graders....

..http://imagehost.vendio.com/a/204295...2NIPPY_NEW.JPG ....some graders back in the 1990's were more lenient than others ....notice the slight tilt of the picture on this otherwise PSA 8 example....you may have to tilt your head and squint to see it ... (PS The card on the bottom received a "1" ... |
Now that one I see exactly what it means. so, another learning moment provided by the good forum community.
Thanks to you both! Cheers, |
I have heard on the boards (not from personal experience) that SGC is returning lots of these diamond cuts as authentic only or not grading them because they are "miscut."
Just something I've read over the last couple months, so there is a chance they would only grade it as authentic. That being said yours is not as severe as many out there, so it might be worth a shot. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk |
To me diamond cut means the cardboard isn't square I've see some pretty amazing rhomboid shapes over the years.
A card that is all right angles with a tilted image I call, well, tilted image. |

This one has been a "placeholder" in an EXMT Set for a while now. Just can't seem to find the perfect center example that I want. Doesn't bother me all that much - but enough to want to replace it. So I think if this one graded out then you should have no problems with your example.

1985 Topps
I think my whole 1985 Topps set is diamond cut. Cutting machine quality control was an afterthought that year, it seems. Too bad, because it is one of the best-looking sets Topps has made otherwise.

From my New Directory of Collectorisms thread...
293. Carat-Top A card with a discernible diamond cut. See also: Rotato - a card that is a true rectangle, but the photo on it is tilted. |

As always, thanks for the helpful information… I think I’ll submit old Johnny to SGC to see what we get.
Anyone want to venture to guess the grade? Here he is again, just for sport: |

Skew
Some call that a "tilt". Some call it a "skew". A slight tilt like you have on Bench might not hurt you very much. I've seen a lot of PSA 8's with a slight tilt.
|
Assuming no creases or wrinkles... I think your Bench would surely get a "6" in the "good old days".
But a this point in time, I wouldn't even submit the card, as they'll probably give it a 4 or 5. Perhaps this is PSA's over-reaction to the massive alteration revelations. Or maybe it's tied to their new management. Regardless, it's definitely happening and they are currently grading 1 -2 points tougher than just a couple years ago. |

Honestly, better than I had even hoped for. I worried that the “tilt” or diamond cut, etc would knock it down too much. Glad I submitted. Thx again for the advice and tips Jeff |
Wow that was fast.
