I am embarrassed to report that a photo of a batter with his bat on the ground that I posted in the 19th century thread, actually depicts a cricket player from an angle that made his bat appear to be a baseball bat. Thanks to Net 54 for their assistance. The photo attached here is cricket player, not a baseball player. Sorry.

Regardless of subject matter, it’s still a very handsome and compelling image.

Thank you Jon and Jim.

I still think it's a great picture.
Anybody with a love of baseball should have at least a minimal interest in cricket if exposed to the game on any level. |
Doug, I agree it is a nice photo and cricket was certainly very important in the history of baseball Unfortunately the cost was for baseball, not cricket. The person I got it from has graciously refunded the money and I have returned the photo. We had both thought it was baseball.

An image such as this could generate a rich discussion about the similarities and differences seen in the crossover dress/fashion of the period. As others have already stated, the cricket connection to baseball...esp. at the time this images likely taken...is strong. The subject could just as easily been handling a baseball bat and, he likely did at some point.
