Ancillary Pieces in Your Collection - Cobb - Gehrig

Was happy to recently pick up this 1927 Cobb presentation photo (loosely defined as premium to me) to go with the 1929 Gehrig one. Some things look good side by side.

That's a great picture of Ty. Both very neat.

Awesome pieces!

"Great home-run protagonist" - interesting descriptor of Cobb in the time of Ruth...

Cobb has such a grin on...
I wonder if his hand sign had anything to do with it (:

Very Cool Piece Leon!

I enjoy premiums from the Billy Taub clothing stores. He was quite a star-chaser in NY at the time and had all sorts of events with premiums made from them. The most famous is the Graphic All Sports Dinner display piece that was also made into a postcard:

Taub did issue a number of other premiums like this one:

The boxer Benny Leonard owned a piece of the business, so it was probably that connection with the lightweight champ that helped pave the way into the athletic circles.

When I saw this train ticket with a PCL advertisement I had to have it:

But maybe my all time favorite ancillary piece is this Harry Covaleski business card for his Giant Killer Cafe:

Very nice Leon.

Kind of funny that Ty looks really happy, and Lou a bit less so.

Here's another ticket from the LA street cars. This one shows Joe Louis in a 1935 fight that took place at LA's Wrigley Field:

I was always happy to have the Home Run Baker National Game card with the Fenway Breweries overprint.

But then when I found the National Game box variation which had the Fenway Breweries promotional sticker overlaid on the outside of the box, I knew I had to have it. Neat ancillary piece (and we just never get to use the word 'ancillary' enough - thanks Leon!).....

So this is a first, a picture of Cobb smiling and Gehrig frowning.

Condition is challenging but you gotta take 'em as you find 'em.

This Babe Ruth as Roman Charioteer newspaper caricature illustration from 1930 is an ancillary item to my collection of Roman chariots.

Brian (I think I used ancillary accurately...?)
