Favorite Flicks
For those who enjoy such discussions, off the top of my head, may have overlooked other winners:
The Wizard of Oz (1939) Casablanca (1942) Psycho (1960) Goldfinger (1964) Young Frankenstein (1974) Chinatown (1974) Annie Hall (1977) Animal House (1978) The Last Waltz (1978) E.T. (1982) The Big Chill (1983) Jurassic Park (1993) The Sixth Sense (1999) |
Tremors
Evil Dead 2 Princess Bride The Big Country 2nd Sixth sense, never saw it coming |
Favorite flicks and no mention of:
Godfather 1 and 2 Fargo Blue Velvet |
Fargo calls to mind a movie that I should have included -- Blood Simple (1984).
|
Kelly's Heroes
West Side Story The Sting Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines Casablanca Frozen |
Give 'The Game' a go. Pretty damn cool flick.
|
Slap Shot
Godfather 1 & 2 Taxi Driver A Clockwork Orange Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer Clerks 12 Angry Men Dead End (1937) |
lots of new releases in these picks!
Sad state of affairs. If it isn't a dequel, prequel, reboot, etc, people won't watch it I guess. Oh Man Animal House! It blows away any type of remake, ie Old School, etc. However, I did like Back to School One of the old talkies I always liked was Glenngarry Glenross Trying to add some off the radar Last train to Busan |
Thanks for the responses. I have been hoping to identify some outstanding lesser-known movies to check out. Here's two more movies that popped into my mind:
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) Body Heat (1981) |
Many great movies have been listed, but I have but 1 favorite movie:
Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Saving Private Ryan. Oh, okay, I have 2 favorite films: Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Saving Private Ryan, and The Exorcist. Three, I have three favorite flicks: Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Saving Private Ryan, The Exorcist, and Invaders from Mars. This could go on forever, so I'll end with: Roger the Shrubber - "Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can say "Ni" at will to old ladies. There is a pestilence upon this land. Nothing is sacred. Even those who arrange and design shrubberies are under considerable economic stress at this period in history." Monty Python and the Holy Grail. |
Here are some of my favorites that I did not see listed:
The Sound of Music Ocean's 11 (1960) The Time Machine Between Two Worlds (1944) Miracle on 34th Street (1947) Mighty Joe Young Mike |
I have a couple that I haven’t seen listed yet:
Twelve O’Clock High American Sniper |
An old guy weighs in:
The Intruder (1962) The Manchurian Candidate (1962 original. The 2004 remake with Denzel Washington is abysmal) Fail Safe (1964) Seven Days in May (1964) Soylent Green (1973) The Outlaw Josey Wales (1977) Falling Down (1992) |
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World
Gone with the Wind Godfather 1, 11 Wizard of Oz Young Frankenstein Casablanca Napoleon Dynamite North by Northwest Goldfinger Sound of Music |
A few British ones:
The Dam Busters Dunkirk Darkest Hour |
Don't know how I forgot: 1966's Carlo Ponti movie Blowup. A great plot and a time capsule for that decade.
|
I feel the most overlooked movie of all time is Slingblade. Powerful movie, great acting. Billy Bob is genius.
|
Many movies I like won't make many lists of all time greats.
Many I used to really like have aged poorly. Shogun Assassin. Lightning Swords of Death- This and the above are cut down from six Japanese movies centered on the same main character. The originals are a bit more harsh than the cut down for the US market versions, which mostly include the comically violent fight scenes with little background. They Live Pale Rider. (and most other Eastwood westerns) Slapshot The wraith Predator 2 - Not as good a movie as the first, but it develops the predators so much more, their "rules" and morals etc. A Sunday in Hell - cycling documentary about Paris Roubaix one year in the 70's. Buckaroo Banzai The Great Race Magnificent Men and Their Flying Machines |
Anyone who enjoys gambling/casino/sports betting movies should check out "The Runner" (1999), with John Goodman and Ron Eldard.
It's probably the best modern movie on those subjects ever made, but somehow it's stayed in complete obscurity |
Some of my faves:
Cool Hand Luke Stand By Me No Country For Old Men Bicycle Thief The 400 Blows |
Any site that sees "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines" get two mentions in a Favorite Flicks thread is A-OK with me.
|
"Tremors
Evil Dead 2 Princess Bride The Big Country" Some of my favorite movies too! I'd add Re-Animator and Midnight Run to these 4 |
Goodfellas.
