SGC problem

Well my excitement didn't last long......I can still say very impressed with the response time of customer service. That said here is my problem:

I received back a few cards that I got from the original owner that SGC graded as "A" which I understood to mean "authentic" - presumably factory short cuts. I was then looking at an Ebay listing where a seller indicated his "A" grade meant altered. There obviously being a huge difference between an alteration and factory short cut, I emailed SGC to inquire. Here is the response I received from Brent ( just minutes after I sent my email):

"The "A" in our grading scale stands for "Authentic". This designation is generally reserved for cards that are original but ineligible for numeric grades due to evidence of some type of alteration (trimming, color enhancement, etc.), but also applies to cards that cannot be numerically graded due to being miscut, "too short", etc. The "A" designation is also used in cases in which we do not numerically grade a particular issue."

I followed up to inquire why the cards I sent were graded "A" and received the following:

"Our graders do not keep notes as to why a card receives the designation that it does. I would be unable to tell you why these cards received an "A" instead of a numeric grade. "

Kind of ridiculous if you ask me. Your thoughts?

I believe if you don't allow them to slab it as Authentic you'll get a written explanation from them as to why they couldn't give it a numerical grade when you get your sub back.

I've recently had sgc slab a few original caramels...from original owner...as authentic as well. I was/am not too happy about this!

For the $$ you pay these TPG'ers, some explanation should be in order. Even if you don't agree with their assessment, it would be nice to know how the "professionals " come to their conclusion. Probably take an extra 10 seconds I would guess. Thomas

I agree there should be a difference between an authentic and altered slab. Maybe a different color A or AA when it's altered.

That being said when the only altered card I ever submitted came back, the grade on my online account listed it as "evidence of trimming" so they do give some info in that case even if the A is the same regardless.

Given that less than two months ago you repeatedly posted you'd not use SGC again because they unfairly up-charged you to slab a non-standard sized item, my thought is: This is kind of funny.

I never allow SGC to slab it as "Authentic" and I have gotten the explanation as to why certain cards didn't get the numerical grade as "Evidence of Trimming."

I think you are mistaken

I have no recollection of the post you describe - feel free to link to it here. Till then -not so funny.
