New Baseball Book on Sam Crawford

1 Attachment(s)
I recently read a new book by Kent Krause about Sam Crawford.

I would suggest it to anyone who enjoys reading about the early days of baseball, and since there is NOT a lot of info that has been published before about Crawford or his career, this is an excellent source of material that appears to be fairly deeply researched.

My affinity of Wahoo Sam aside, I would argue he is truly one of the most "forgotten" great players of the turn of the century in baseball.

Would love to get some comments from anyone else that has read it.

Happy Collecting!

Dave

When I was in my teens, I would send players index cards and pictures to sign. I would always ask them a question (even if I already knew the answer) because I liked having them answer in their own handwriting. My question for Sam was how did he get the nickname "Wahoo." He was kind enough to respond.

Will check this out. His chapter in The Glory of Their Times is one of my favorites.

David--I love that photo! Making it even better is that he signed in green, which would be a perfect compliment to a trademark green Cobb autograph. Nice to see Crawford as an older gentleman.

I'll definitely have to find a copy of this book. Larry Ritter taught us a little about Crawford as a person, not just a ballplayer. This aspect is what has most fascinated me. Crawford was a voracious reader and from what I gather was an intelligent autodidact with strong opinions. He just seemed so different from the stereotype that most people had of players at the turn of the century. I know I'm not alone in saying this, but I think I'd have really enjoyed his company.

This gives me the opportunity to post a picture of one of my favorite pre-war cards. At some point I'll get it graded.

That’s wonderful. Thanks for sharing!

Sure wish I would’ve been able to correspond with Wahoo Sam in my lifetime. I’m just gonna do my best to continue to preserve the letters and cards he shared with collectors of prior generations.

Planning to get a copy of this book soon.

Regarding Sam Crawford, I recently acquired a cabinet photo without team or player IDs that I've nailed down as the 1900 Cincinnati Reds...featuring Jake Beckley, Aussie great Joe Quinn, Harry Steinfeldt, and a 20-year-old Sam Crawford in his first full season in the majors.

Book ordered! Thanks for posting about it!

Roy - terrific photo. Was that Wagner Hotel in Ohio?

Steve - that Virginia Extra of Crawford is great. Don't think I have ever seen one before.

I just got my copy of his book this weekend when I stopped by Wahoo NE county museum to see the Crawford display. Worth the stop if anyone’s happens to be in that area.
Looking forward to the book
