April Pick Ups

Technically this arrived three days ago and I will admit to saving it for Opening Day of the 50th Anniversary Season for my beloved 1971 Pirates. I have been looking for one of these for since 2015 when Howard Chasser made me aware of its existence. His bust is the only other example of this rare Clemente memorial bust I have ever seen. It always amazes me that these fragile chalk ware mementos ever survive. Happy Opening Day my friends.

Fantastic pickup Mike! That will go well in your Pirate collection.

Awesome piece Mike...
Sooooooo rare, and looks like you snagged one in great condition. Congrats on an epic acquisition! |
Fantastic, Mike! That’s a hell of a way to kick off the 50 year anniversary of your 1971 Buccos.

Im having a good month. Last night I stumbled across this photo of Steve Blass in his trophy room. Its generally not the type of photo I add to my collection. However, this was a must have as its a perfect companion piece. Two of the awards featured prominently in the photo are part of my collection. Its cool to see how he displayed them in his home.

Wow, that really ties it all together. Outstanding!

Yes! Better than a rug!

Got this bat in the mail today. I didn't have one of the cheap 180 Flame Tempered Wade Boggs models. This one has Merrell Lynch Managers Meeting on the back so figure it would be double cool to add to my collection. Can't be too many of them around.

April Additions
Nice stuff guys, sure remember those 70`s Pirates and the famous "buggy whip". As usual late to the party. Caught the Jackie Robinson "bug" but tough on a budget. Picked up the April 1947 ticket and this week a 50`s postcard. It`s not in the greatest shape but always loved this shot of Jackie ! Happy hunting....

I got a little stupid this weekend...

Impressive collection of photos, congratulations!

LOVE that Alcindor photo by Emmons. Must've been impossible to block one of his shots. Emmons was the premier photographer of the 1960s-70s, as evidenced by this tremendous image.
Great pickups! |
Thanks, Mike. I have really enjoyed your pickups. That Blass picture is awesome. I think we had that same wood paneling in our basement in the 70s....

I was the second bidder on a couple of bigger items (first time going that high for me) but didn't land them. I did get one photo, though, which made me laugh when I saw it. Reminds me of my life, I guess.... |
Tommy Bond...close to making the Hall
1 Attachment(s)
Tommy Bond pitched two big league seasons before the National League existed. In the NL's first year in 1876 Bond was a 31-game winner. He won 40 or more games in each of the next three seasons. I just picked up his lifetime pass then added a page for him on my website (CooperstownExpert.com).
He's a solid candidate for the Hall. He earned the major league's first pitching triple crown in 1877, won 234 games and has a career 2.14 ERA. He had six seasons with 20+ wins, four with 30+ wins, and three straight with 40+ wins. Some criticize his 10-year career as too brief for Cooperstown, but only 59 pitchers in history threw more innings than Bond. Here's more about his qualifications. If you like the lifetime passes, here's a link to a page with passes from Hall of Famers Sliding Billy Hamilton, Joe Sewell, Al Simmons, Stan Coveleski, Dick Williams, Joe Cronin, Early Wynn, and Joe McCarthy. Passes from non-Cooperstown men are there too, including those from Minnie Minoso, Dave Parker, Harvey Haddix, Ned Garver, and George Scott. |
^^^^ Wow! I would say he’s HOF worthy.
I mean, for crissakes, Harold Baines is in. :( |

I don’t see much vintage equipment on the pick up thread so I thought I’d share this group I just got. I’ve told myself I start being more selective and buy less but better stuff. They sold this in lots so I got quantity to get three or four things I wanted. Looks like I’ll be doing some selling or trading the excess.

And then it totally doesn't happen. My baseball room is FULL. Luckily, the home accounting office is pretty cool with it, but did say I should spend more on bat racks, and less on bats. |
Mail day!

I picked up an awesome Ted bat for my collection!
I think it is a pro stock bat, because it is a bit too short for his personal orders. I never seen the knobs marked with the tipped over "1" before. |
