Opinions on authenticity of two 33 Goudeys
 

Purchased these recently and I have concerns they may be weathered reproductions, especially the Kiki Cuyler card. The coloring seems way too even on the backs and fronts and the surface on the Cuyler card is very shiny, prominent coated stock feel. The thickness seems right but the creases seem weird also like the white stock is jumping out inside. I may just be paranoid due to the market these days and the number of great reproductions out there. They seem different in hand than the rest of my 1933 Goudeys, Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

look bad to me...esp kuyler...but goudeys can wear poorly in my experience.

Do the feel test. Rub the two between your fingers then do the same with your others. If they feel a lot different then that is reason for concern.
I don't see any obvious tells of them being fake. But hard to tell on a screen.

They look like authentically beat up originals to me. The image of the Cuyler ended up full of glare, but still looks legit.

I find it very hard to believe anyone would beat up some fakes that badly as to make them virtually worthless even as originals.

Does it really matter? How much could you have to pay for those if you wanted them?

Maranville definitely looks fine to me. Cuyler probably is too but the glare makes it tougher to tell.

They're both authentic.

Thanks guys. I had trust in the seller but just wanted to double check the authenticity. I like the fact they are really worn. I enjoy these as much as I do cards in excellent condition. They have a story to tell.

Not a matter of money but I want the cards in my PC to be the real deal even in poor condition.

Use the micro portion of your phones camera or look 4x zoomed in on from about 8" away. Look for the print layers and dots. If it has rosettes its a fake. Another easy way to tell, if the back print isn't solid under microscope, it's also a fake. Meaning the print has dots in the back.

If you have access to them, illuminate them with an ultraviolet light. If they fluoresce, then they're reprints.

I believe those two cards, from the pictures alone, to be genuine.

I am onboard with the 'story to tell' aspect of cards that are a bit worn. You aren't afraid to touch them. It's not traumatic if you drop one.

100% this. My 10x loupe is my best tool for looking at '33 Goudeys by far. The original halftone dots are very distinctive, and reprints are equally distinctive. Agree with Derek that the green lettering on the back may be the quickest way to tell.

As to why someone would do this to reprints, it could be practice for doctoring more expensive cards ( like the many Ruth reprints on Ebay). But most likely they are genuine.

Here is an example of a reprint vs original. I got sent this off a Seller from etsy who sold it as an authentic 33. Had bad pictures but accepted refunds so I bought it and immediately sent it back once seeing it.

Both look real to me.

I've had many very beat-up Goudeys in my day.
