This photo captures Walter Johnson as a young child with his schoolmates and teachers at the Crescent Valley School in Humboldt, Kansas, where he was born and raised, a classic one-room country school for all ages. I would guess Johnson to be about five years old in this, one of only a handful of photos of him as a juvenile that survive, and which dates to about 1892. The 6&1/2'x4" photo is mounted on heavier stock paper measuring 7&1/2"x6&1/4." There is considerable fading to the image, a full-length crack through the photo that has been taped on the front and back, as well as other types of abuse inflicted upon it over the years. A blow-up of the Johnson image is included. (note the right arm.)
