Did you ever pick up the Chadwick Clipper woodcut? It was from around 1880 and double or triple the size of the others.

There is an 1874 Philadelphia Athletics w/Cap Anson, also very cool. Sorry, I don’t have a pic of it handy.

I did. Traded it to a hobby friend a few years ago after I had picked up an 1868 Oval Photo of Chadwick. Sold it to the same guy. Now all I have is a Spalding Guide image of Chadwick from 1889. Oops!

I’ve always loved that one of Anson. I really want the cabinet with the same image. I’ve seen a few of these Harper’s of the 1874 Philadelphia team that were colorized (is that a word?). Is that a variation or did someone / some people do that on their own upon receipt of the Weekly?

Similar to Derek’s Frank Grant, there is also a Sol White from around 1889 that was part of a team composite of 9, if I recall correctly.

Lew Lipset was the man when it came to NY Clipper woodcuts. He had many of the complete newspapers as well. That’s where I got just about all of mine that I had at one time, I believe I had each of the HOF’ers that were produced.

Lew also self-published a softcover “booklet” which pictured every NY Clipper baseball woodcut ever produced. Very hard to find today, a very small quantity was made, maybe something like 50 or so. I was able to buy one off of eBay many years ago but no longer have it.

Derek, the color versions of the woodcuts are not really an issue, but are hand done mostly many years later. I believe there is still a company that is colorizing these. At one time they used to send them on spec to bookshops etc. some are pretty accurate, but many are not. Gary’s example above is particularly well done. (And thank you.)
As for the New York Clipper books I know of at least 2 versions. The Lipset version is hard to find, but there are at least 3 copies available online 40-50 bucks or so.
The other version is a Mcfarland publication from around 2010,. It has the biographies and I think all the woodcuts. I know there is a 2 volume version but I think there may be a 1 volume version also, not sure. These are also available but last I looked were more expensive.

Love the players expressions. Eyes popping as their player gets beaned in the face. Haven't found an earlier depiction of a negro league game. Few years after this Fleetwood Walker would be the 1st official African-American in baseball. Only to be kicked out after Cap Anson refused to play with colored players, resulting in a half century ban on colored players. Darwinism was used as Ansons' reasoning.

Gary, have not seen that Daily Graphic Cincinnati before, very nice. Unusual it would be 1873.
Derek, the images you ask about are both from 1869, one is sheet music, the other from Leslie’s.

That's a great woodcut and I'm quite certain that it's the one of the first baseball woodcuts from the Daily Graphic. In that same year, there were woodcuts depicting the Baltimore, Athletics and Atlantics club in that same half page format.

Bruce, that sheet music is fantastic as well! The Cincinnati Red Stocks Leslie's woodcut from 1869 is the toughest Leslie's woodcut to find imo. I have seen a lot more of the Creighton woodcuts over a 20+ year period but have rarely seen that Red Stockings collage.

Gary, yes, I am an idiot. I saw George and Harry and my mind immediately went to 1869 .
George, I agree that the 1869 Leslie’s is very tough to find. Somewhere on here there is a post I did that tried to list the various images of the 1869 team, many of which were adapted for other uses. It would probably take you a week to post all your woodcuts.

Here is one depicting Spalding's 1888-89 World Tour's stop in England from the "The Illustrated London News" March 23,1889. It's somewhat like Gary's 1865 Leslies in that it has a lot going on. Teams, action scenes, players and instructions on game play terms.
