Sounds like this will be their last auction with their current software platform, per latest email. As big as they are, this is really their only option moving forward.
|
This was sent to all bidders
Dear Goldin Auctions Users The extended bidding period will begin at 11:15pm eastern. Extended bidding rules apply. If there are further interruptions we will act accordingly. We have been developing an in house technology platform and this is the last auction that we will be running on third party software. Authenticity and trust is the foundation on which Goldin is built and tonight we let all of you down. We apologize for this inconvenience and know that we will be working around the clock until we have our own platform live. We have to do better and we will. https://goldinauctions.com/catalog.aspx |
What are the reasons that auction houses use a third party auction platform?
Is one of the reasons to allow bidders to feel safe that an auction house has limited opportunity to manipulate the outcome of an auction? |

Ken should go back to the home shopping channel. Then people will still have time to get these amazing deals and they wont have any interruptions.
|
This was the reason I never started my own auction site and kept selling at shows and on eBay. With all the other BS and now server issues, I am glad I did not go any further. Have had the auction software before and you almost need a full time person just for IT issues everyday. I will take a step further and have some items on my website, just too much time and effort to have an auction these days. Hopefully at some point they will all get it figured out!

Looking forward to it |
Don't be too sure about that. In theory, the 3rd party folks are *supposed* to be well versed in this. The reason someone goes 3rd party is to not re-invent the wheel and benefit from their knowledge. I wouldn't expect baseball card experts to be software developers. I mean they may, but it's not what I would expect.
Taking it in house and rolling your own can be advantageous but it will be version 1.0 for them when they get started. There's an old saying, "Version 1.0 means never having to say you're sorry." Expect some more bumps in the road. I know we all want folks to succeed, just acknowledge that getting software right is hard. |

It seems to me that most of the problems from last year and this year are mostly: 1. Hosting site was hacked and code hijacked. 2. Server robustness inadequate to handle huge volumes of activity as auctions neared closing. Start with a new, clean instance of complete, high-quality auction software, customize to an AH's needs, import legacy data, integrate with outside platforms (for instance, 3rd party paying like PayPal,) test it like crazy by having a mock auction (invite net54 members plus existing AH customers to participate in a fake, fantasy auction to stress test the system,) and you should have a good chance of success going forward. And above all, make security and redundancy (backup servers, etc.) a central part of operations. With the infusion of cash Goldin recently negotiated, they can easily and cost effectively get where they want to be. |

That 52 Topps mantle PSA 8 is a bad 8. There's very noticeable yellowish in the signature box. Not sure when graded is like this or turn yellow after graded

The Prices Goldin Auctions has gotten over the past few years have risen the bar for every collector. Going up against Hackers determined to hurt the ability of collectors to conduct normal business. Is just an extremely difficult task. I would not wish it on anyone. And as both a Consignor and long time customer of Goldin Auctions I hope that their taking their auction software in-house makes it easier and safer for us all.
My understanding is Goldin and many other auction houses as well as Simple Auction software are the victim of serious and very sophisticated crimes. Committed by very serious criminals. Orginized crime many times on an international level attacking not just auction houses and by extention all of us here, but virtually every business in our country. Why do some feel it is ok to bash the victims of these crimes? Clearly the majority of these victims are forced to spend time money etc. To fight those committing these crimes. And maybe insted of blaming the victims a little support would be in order. I will not let internet terrorism deter me from conducting business and enjoying my hobby despite the small inconvenience to me. And I will stand up and next to victims of these crimes. All I can say is OMG to the realized prices. I must live in a vacuum.

thank you for your courage johnathan.

I guess the hammer price + 23% is what the “realized price” is?
Is tax included too? Appears the credit card fee is. |

Interesting that the 52 Jackie going for just under a million didn't make the notable list. Tough crowd.

Consigned some items to Goldin and they will end tonight. So far, the current high bids already exceed my expectation. Thank you Goldin!

Lol. That cracked me up. |
"World records "
Well if they had bidding on Mars, it would be the record there too. |

Lot 65 - 1948 Leaf #79 Jackie Robinson Rookie Card – PSA NM 7 = $402,210 This cards hammer price was $327,000. 20% buyers premium = 392,400. Additional 3% puts it at 402,210. Guess you gotta milk every extra % out when you’re breaking “WORLD RECORDS” even if that 3% only exists when paying via credit card. |

It's freakin awesome that there are people who think sportscards are SO wonderful they will spend entirely incomprehensible sums on them. How that pans out for them is not my problem or your problem. Sportscards have stepped out into the brilliant sunshine to become the most highly valued collectable on the planet. I love cards so that makes me smile. Doesn't change one bit what I will or won't spend. That's on me. |

I got some of that too! |
The prices across the hobby have been remarkable, and over the last year, Goldin has definitely taken a big step at the head of the sports auction world. Congrats and Kudos to Ken for that, and here's to hoping that the new platform means the end of the issues.
I won the 1 item I was really chasing, so I'm happy. Thankfully it wasn't something that drew crazy attention since my wallet is a tiny fraction of those bigtime sales. |
Just checked on a tracked item PSA 3 Green Cobb and Goldin says it closed at $500. What a steal!
|
Quote:
If the card you were following was in the Lots that closed last night, the only prices posted until the entirety of the Auction has closed is the opening price. If the PSA1 Green Cobb just closed for 4K, I think it's safe to say the PSA3 went significantly higher.;) |
