Is there a consensus one way or the other in regards to PSA for authentication?
I was under the impression they had a good reputation, but after seeing this cut Mantle they deemed good I have to wonder. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mickey-Mant....c101197.m1850 |
There is nothing wrong with that item. The seller is incorrect on its age, however. It's a later career example.

Agreed it is authentic - circa 1960ish.

It's fine. I've been at this a long time.
Mantle was still experimenting with his M's at this point in time. You see a lot of different styles and yes, even the odd sizing difference. The classic Mantle autograph that most are familiar with didn't really solidify until quite a bit later on--early 1970's. Mantle had nearly developed his autograph to the way he ultimately wanted it by the tail end of his playing days, but there were some rather nuanced adjustments still to be made. |

PSA is pretty solid for autograph and photo authentication.
Wish I could say the same for cards, but they cannot detect alteration, and (for preferred customers) do not even try. Plus, they will censor/cancel you for bringing up legitimate concerns or asking simple questions via their self-serving and one-sided forum. That said... I agree that they got the Mantle cut right, and have seen that exact style numerous times in the past. |
