Old Babe Ruth photo outside Sportsman Park
1 Attachment(s)
This is a photo that has been in my family for years. My grandpa worked for the Post Dispatch in which this ended up in the paper. This photo is from the world series where Babe Ruth promised to hit a home run for a kid that was sick and his 3rd home run went out of Sportsman Park and thru the dealerships window where he took a picture with the ball outside a few days later. My question is. does anyone know what this could be worth? I would imagine it is a Type 1 photo. the name of the person who took the photo is on the back along with I guess who they worked for. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

Do not know worth but that is a great photo

thanks I have had it about 35 years with all my baseball cards and I finally pulled them all back out this week

I’m assuming it is 6.5x8.5 and assuming it is Type I....I’d say $600-ish. Give or take $200 either way. It’s a good photo. Not quite a great photo. Just my opinion…

That is a great photograph. Nice collection piece. I’m sure the photograph is dated or a newspaper article could verify when the Babe visited the dealership for the photograph.
I’m wondering if it was more than just a few days after the home run. The reason is the dealership would have had to come up with the idea to have the sign made, had a company make it, have it installed, and somehow arranged for the photograph opportunity with the Babe all in a few days? Surely possible, but that’s a quick turnaround. |

I'll bet that the car dealership across the street from the stadium had a contact with the team, and breaking a car window with your third home run during a WS game doesn't happen very often. Post game press session : Reporter - "Hey Babe, did you know that your third home run broke a window in a car across the street? The Babe - "Is that right kid? Maybe I should go take a picture with it?" Ruth wasn't exactly shy... |
I believe the photo is from 1926. The photographer on the back is stamped with WC Persons and after some research I learned he was a photographer from St Louis during that time period who covered sports among many other things and sights thruout St. Louis
I have found other advertisements Chevy did later on with this picture attached |

"The Wells Motor Co. didn't waste any time. Just a couple of days later, a sign was in place over the store that read: "WELLS MOTOR CO., WINDOW BROKEN when BABE RUTH, Drove The Ball Over Right Field Pavilion Breaking, All Records For Home Runs In One Series Game." Babe Ruth showed up for a photo shoot standing next to the car, and the full page advertisement was featured in the October 10, newspapers." There is also an image of an almost identical photo except from a somewhat different angle shown. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...43b678a8_z.jpg and here is the ad in the Oct 10 1926 St Louis Post-Dispatch https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...604832e4_c.jpg |
Thanks that is a great find, I have seen the pictures in there but no article with it like this.

You could have bought yourself a coach or coupe, or maybe even a sedan or Landau, for what your photo would bring today.

Like the photo. Lots of character. Appears to be original/type 1.
That ad likely raises its value and collector interest. |
