Doug, do you by chance have a pic of an offering or coupon page used to obtain the m113 and m114 posters?

Thanks, Bob

With apologies to Bob for editing his actual quote (which comes from the thread where I show off my newest acquisitions) for context purposes in this thread, I have gone thru the ads from my collection of Baseball Magazines starting in 1909 and will use this new thread to discuss how the m113s and later m114s were released.

I do not have every issue of the magazine, so there are gaps in my knowledge, and I would be quite happy for others to post with facts or opinions (contrary to politics these days, those are two separate things).

First poster issued in 1909 not 1910

Here we go...

According to my Standard catalog of Baseball Cards (17th Edition, printed in 2008) the first m113 posters were released by the Baseball Magazine Company in 1910.

The players released that year were : Ty Cobb, Johnny Evers, Hughie Jennings & Honus Wagner.

However, taking a look at the ads printed in the magazine, the first poster was advertised in August 1909 issue of the magazine, and for that reason I am going to use August 1909 as the release date for the poster.

This is the earliest advertisement I could find, and based on the wording my opinion is that it is the first. I have the July 1908 issue which does not have an ad for the posters in it, and every magazine after the August issue has at least one poster ad for the next few years.

Also, the August 1909 issue is the only issue I have that announces the poster ad on the cover, so I think that is a very strong chance that my opinion is actually fact. I only have a few issues prior to July 1909, so if any of you have the issues prior to that, and have the time to check, let us know if there are any earlier ads.

The "Tyrus Cobb" poster would be the one advertised, as it's caption says "Photogravure Series No 1".

The "Ty Cobb" poster would have been released later, I'm thinking in 1910 or 1911 when they ran out of the initial printing. Both of mine measure 12 1/2 by 21 inches, slightly larger than advertised.

4 more posters issued in 1909

I don't have the Sept 1909 issue of Baseball Magazine, but am quite confident that it contains an ad for poster #2 of Honus Wagner.

The reason for my confidence is based on two factors, if you looked closely at the Aug 1909 ad for the Ty Cobb poster, it announces "next month Honus Wagner", and the Oct 1909 issue contains the ad for poster #3 of Harry Lord.

In addition to picturing the new poster, each monthly ad mentions the player who will be featured on the next poster, so the Nov 1909 issue containing the ad for poster #4 Frank Chance isn't a surprise, and neither is the Dec 1909 ad for poster #5 Hughie Jennings.

Also, there is a running list of the posters that have been issued in each ad.

So, at the end of 1909 we see that all four posters listed in the Standard Catalog as being issued in 1910 were actually issued in 1909, with Harry Lord thrown in for good measure. Poor Harry isn't listed in the catalog as ever having a poster issued, but there it is.

And, there are more surprises yet to come...

Doug,

This is fascinating. As someone who collects autographed M113 & M114, I am intrigued by issue date and context because it helps explain the autograph seeker’s process as well.

I will be following along!

Pirates Team for 1909

I don't have the January 1910 issue of the magazine, but the February issue has an ad for a 30 X 9 photogravure picture of the "World's Champions".

The Standard catalog only has Pirates team photos issued in 1921, 1925 and 1927 all of which would be m114s.

I think it may be this : https://catalog.scpauctions.com/lot-32502.aspx

But the picture is slightly different (non player on the end isn't in the ad). Sorry I can't get the SCP auction pic any bigger.
