OT Somewhat: Woodcut blocks for 19th century publications
For the printing experts out there, do any of you have thoughts on 'scaling' of actual wood blocks for 19th century publications? Here's an example. I have both this Harper's woodcut and an actual woodblock that is identical in feature BUT the sizes are very different (publication is ~2"x9" while block is 1"x5"). I do have a few original metal blocks from the Daily Graphic which are original and the correct size.
My guess is that the actual woodblock was used for another purpose as a letterhead press but could be mistaken. Thanks. <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/186654475@N08/50832786196/in/dateposted-public/" title="Screen Shot 2021-01-13 at 3.34.28 PM"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50832786196_479d54d4b3_b.jpg" width="1008" height="332" alt="Screen Shot 2021-01-13 at 3.34.28 PM"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/186654475@N08/50832870982/in/dateposted-public/" title="Screen Shot 2021-01-13 at 3.45.02 PM"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50832870982_3f571f354f_b.jpg" width="779" height="1024" alt="Screen Shot 2021-01-13 at 3.45.02 PM"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> |
