Cast Iron bank - Ty Cobb?
 

I bought this cast iron bank about 10 years ago at an antique store. Since then, I've noticed on ebay it's often associated with Ty Cobb. Is this an example of keyword spamming? Does anyone know anything about this particular bank? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...4ee4fc10ad.jpg

When I read your title to this thread, that was the bank I was expecting to see. I've also seen it attributed to Cobb but I'm not sure why it is exactly.

Yeah, the cast iron batter is standing there holding the bat as a right handed hitter. I've usually thought the sellers are blowing smoke. But it's been this way for a few years now. Im wondering if it's domino effect, where someone clicked a button using a current / previous listing.

Me 2...wishful thinking propogated over time...imo. I used to have one with no paint...looked generic to me.

And with the paint, the uniform looks like Cincinnati; certainly not Detroit.

On a somewhat related note, but at the risk of hijacking the thread, as a Federal League collector I've also noticed that these dog statues are frequently attributed to being related to the FL's St. Louis Terriers:

Similar to the Cobb bank, I have never seen any indication that they were actually related to the Federal League club. Indeed, not only do they come up much to frequently, in my opinion, to be related to the Federal League, but they don't even resemble a terrier to me.

I'm pretty positive it has nothing at all to do with the Federal League. Griwsold Pup paperweights seem like the beanie babies of early 20th century.

Nah, it's been referred to as the "Ty Cobb Bank" for decades. Not a recent phenomenon at all. Even major auction houses have sold them under that name.

I agree that it's generic in nature (and bears very little resemblance to Cobb). But that's the moniker it was given many years ago, which somehow managed to stick and become the hobby norm. :confused:

I believe I have seen these painted in three different combinations. There might be more.

A very cool, yet generic piece that has perhaps been called "Ruthian" on occasion... but never seriously attributed to the Babe.

Right. Called Babe Ruth by Ebay sellers, even with a 1913 on the bottom of it. I think Ruth was still in detention in 1913.

It makes a person wonder why, though. I would like to see original advertising for it.
