Tom Seaver and the bumbling Mets
This article really opened my eyes to how badly the Mets botched their relationship with Tom Seaver. Multiple times. Stunning. No wonder at the end of his life Seaver had mixed feelings towards the organization. The single most important player in the history of the franchise. Simply staggering. Imagine the Yankees treating Jeter or Mantle like this, or the Bulls treating Michael Jordan. Really mind boggling in the degree of ineptness over many years.
A good read and a breathaking photo I have never seen before. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...ver-death.html |
i grew up a Met Fan and although at the Time i was only 10 years ole' i wanted to Egg & Toilet Paper the Owners Home... Really!

Still, I believe he went into the Hall as a Met. So his bitterness to the org. must have abated.

I love the Mets but they have never done right by Tom. |
I still wonder, if he hadn't been injured, he could have put the Red Sox over the top in the 86 Series.

In fairness, the Yankees are fully capable of alienating a legend. Yogi stayed away from Yankee Stadium for 14 years due to how he was let go as manager. Not as many screw ups as the Mets with Tom, to be sure, but still not a good look. |
Yogi was a good man. Raised his family in the NJ town where I raised mine. Bumped into him a few times at charity events. My Christmas tree has three signed Yogi ornaments.
